- The History of Berrow FC
Berrow Football Club was founded in 1969 by a few village residents and after a few friendlies, played its first official game in the Weston & District Football League in August of that year.
They played their first season at Unity Farm then moved onto a pitch near Church House Road. 1971 saw the start of Berrow Reserves and the present club colours with the first team changing its kit to Red & Black stripes. When this area was used for housing a couple of seasons later the Club returned to Unity Farm until they eventually moved to their current home at Red Road Playing Fields in 1978.
The Club slowly grew in numbers and commitment from members of the Club, past and present, have meant that facilities have greatly improved. The acquisition of the Millennium Field by the Parish Council and the completion of the new changing room complex in 2004 mean that Berrow now has some of the best facilities in the area.
The 1st team were promoted to the Somerset County Football League at the start of the 2004/05 season, after consecutive Weston Super Mare League Championships (Division 2 Champions 2001/02, Division 1 Champions 2002/03 & 2003/04) and did well, finishing 6th in their first season in Division 3. They were promoted to the second division in the 2005/2006 season, however after a league reshuffle they were placed in the new County league Division 2 West, where they still currently play. The Reserves are currently in Division 5 of the Weston and District League and as numbers grew the Club has entered a third team (Berrow Colts) in Division 6 of this League, however the side had to be disbanded after its second season due to commitment issues from the players.
Despite the expansion in numbers the Club tries to keep the village atmosphere and friendliness that it started with in 1969 by after match drinks at the Berrow Club and by holding fund raising events for the whole Club. At the end of the day the Club wants to be successful but without forgetting where it came from and that the game is there for our enjoyment.
