BOYTHORPE....3 WHITE SWAN RESERVES....1
After a LONG 7 week lay off from League action, it was no suprise that that the two teams struggled to find any rhytham at Somersall Park today. Benny rested one or two key players for various reasons, and gave league starting debuts to Craig Megyesi up front, and Steve Miles at left back after Phil Lawrence turned up to the team meet up sporting a bandage on his hand.
Megyesi was unlucky not to latch onto a smart through ball as he cut beyond the static Swan defence as early as the 1st minute. On 10 minutes Boythorpe were awarded a free kick for handball wide on the left, the ball was put into the mix by Brown, and Lee Waltons first time shot was parried by the keeper to Megyesi, who then saved the strikers shot. Within a minute Shane Bennett went close with a rasping 35 yard shot that missed the goal by inches. Megyesi went close again moments later after the impressive Miles had set Walton clear, he collected the ball before his cross found the striker, but his effort just bobbled harmlessly to the keeper.
On the quater hour good work by Brown saw the skipper beat 2 players before feeding the ball to Walton and his shot almost crept under the keepers low dive. Boythorpe's pressure paid off on 18 minutes, the ball was won in midfield before Walton found MEGYESI and although he didnt strike his shot well, the ball bobbled and squirmed past the keeper for 1-0. Boythorpe now started to push forward and Bonson won the ball with a strong tackle, found Higginbottom and his smart cross was put just over by Megyesi as he threatened to add to his total.
Scott Bennett then curled a fine shot beyond the keeper and just past the post on the half hour White Swan then managed to put a few passes together and push forward a bit more, but the force of Miles, Goodwin, Hardy, Higginbottom and keeper Furniss in defence stood firm, although on 43 mins a great through ball breached the defence but Furniss raced from goal and blocked bravely with his feet. HALF TIME Boythorpe..1 White Swan Res...0.
White Swan went close straight from the off in the second half, winning a corner that the striker met well unchallenged, Furniss caught the effort easilly, before bowling the ball out to Walton, who in turn raced the length of the pitch before being tackled well by the defender who was tracking him. On 48 mins Boythorpe won a penalty after Goodwin was impeded in the box at a corner, but Brown put the spot kick over.
BROWN was to make ammends 2 mins later though, when Scott Bennett took his time on the edge of the 18 yard box and finding his captain with a crisp low pass, and he did the rest firing the ball low into the corner of the net. Furniss saved well on 54 mins, but as the keeper was on the floor, he had Higginbottom to thank for clearing a rebound shot off his line with a fine header away. Soon after great work by MOTM Bonson who found Megyesi, who in turn fed Scott Bennett sadly came to nothing. It turned out to be Bennetts last contribution to the game as he was replaced by substitute Kev Widerman just after the hour.
White Swan again started to make an impression on the game, a great through ball and shot was well parried by Furniss, who then saved the follow up well. At the other end a corner was well met by Goodwin, but the Swan keeper made the save of the match, pushing the ball away before then collecting the rebound under pressure. White Swans good work was rewarded on 66 mins, a low cross into the box was only half cleared by Higginbottom, and the ball was stabbed home for 2-1.
White Swan had another gilt edged chance 0n 70 mins, Brown gave away a needless free kick 25 yards out in a central position, but although it was well struck nice and low Furniss parried the ball to safety. With just 15 mins to go leading scorer Wright came on for Megyesi. From a White Swan corner Bonson headed clear to Walton, who fed Widerman, who raced clear the length of the pitch, but dallied too long and was robbed of possesion just inside the visitors box. Wright almost put the game beyond Swan on 77 mins, Brown sent him free, but the keeper smothered the ball at the strikers feet.
Boythorpe began to push forward to kill the game and Walton, Wright and then Brown all went close before the skipper sent WRIGHT clear in time added on and the red hot in form striker did the rest clipping the ball into the corner of the net. FINAL SCORE Boythorpe...3 White Swan Reserves...1 Elsewhere in division 8 Red Hot Favourites for the league (according to the Derbyshire Times) Renishaw Miners Welfare LOST 3-2 at home against Hopflower United meaning they have now dropped 13 (THIRTEEN) points rom 12 games Hmmm! HUTSON CUP PERLIMINERY ROUND
Boythorpe...3 White Swan Reserves...0
Boythorpe moved into the last 16 of the Hutson Cup at the expense of next to bottom of the league White Swan Res, but it wasnt a classic performance by any means at Somersall Park last sunday.
Kicking uphill on a cold morning, on a pitch that had recovered well from the previous weeks mud bath Boythorpe pushed forward at the start. After 3 minutes Wright was unlucky to be caught offside after being put clear. On 5 minutes the Blues took the lead from what some people would say "a fluke of a goal" i would prefer to say "it was a case of the player showing superb vision". BONSON picked up the ball in his own half before trading passes with Shane Bennett and continuing his run to the touchline and cutting back beating a defender and sending a shot cum cross drifting over the keeper towards the back post. The keeper flapped at the ball but was unable to keep it from crossing the line for 1-0.
Wright went close after 13 mins, but his fierce low shot was well held by the keeper. Higginbottom had a fine run and shot soon after, then good work by Scott Bennett saw the keeper tip the ball onto the bar, the ball dropped to Wright with the goal at his mercy his powerfull shot came back off the upright. Within 2 mins Wright was again foiled by the keeper when he smothered the ball well at the strikers feet.
On the half hour Scott Bennett was set free with a through ball, but it took an outrageous bobble as the striker squared to shoot, and the ball sailed over the net. The visitors were still dangerous going forward but never looked likely to score as time after time the final shot let them down, but Boythorpe still made heavy weather of clearing and keeping possesion of the ball, but right on half time could have increased the lead, Widerman found Lee Walton with a through ball, but he put the chance over. HALF TIME Boythorpe...1 White Swan Res...0
Boythorpe were so close to being caught out within a minute of the re-start, a smart 30 yard free kick went inches wide of Furniss's goal, with the defence looking at each other. On 51 mins Wright scuffed his shot wide after being played through by Lee Walton. A White Swan corner caused absolute panic in the Blues box as they tried to hack the ball clear a number of times before eventually clearing thier lines. Widerman went close on 55, but again the ball sailed over. Both teams struggled at times and good football was at a premium, but Boythorpe were just slightly better than thier visitors.
The Referee shown Yellow cards to White Swan number 4 and Boythorpes Lee Walton on 66 mins. And Lee Wright was replaced by Steve Miles on 68 mins after the out of sorts striker had complained of feeling ill. The game became very disjointed from this point, and Swan had a great chance when Hardy out by the corner flag, turned and sent the ball high into his own six yard box, but the hosts got away with it.
It was left to the impressive BONSON to put the Blues further into the lead, MOTM Martyn Higginbttom put the ball into the visitors box, and although a defender had the ball, he dallied too long and Bonson made a strong tackle to rob him of the ball before beating the keeper from close range. This killed any fight from the visitors and Boythorpe rounded off the game with 5 mns left. Walton found WIDERMAN and the red hot, in form striker did the rest. Boythorpe on another day against stronger opposition would have been picked off, but they got the right result and now take thier place in the last 16 in a competition that is ONLY open to the bottom TWO divisions.
