League fixture, 10-45 am KO - Sunday 21 March 2010

AFC Grouse....0 Boythorpe....1
Boythorpe registered thier THIRD 'double' of the season, at a very bumpy Highfield Park. Kicking downhill, they carved out a golden chance straight from the kick off, Lee Walton picking out Wright, with a fine ball down the wing, Wright sent in a superb low cross into the six yard box, but the ball evaded Widerman rushing in. They went close a couple of mins later afer a blatant push on Wright, Shane Bennett sent the free kick in low but the keeper gathered easily.
Grouse went close after winning a corner from a great Steve Miles clearance, Goodwin headed the corner away only as far as a Grouse player but he fired over when well placed. On 10 mins good work by Widerman sent Wright clear with a through ball, but the ball bobbled in front of the striker to the grateful keeper. On 18 mins Higginbottom was beaten by the surface, allowing the ball under his foot, but the chance was wasted.
The pitch was playing a great part with all the players having trouble controlling the ball, but a great team move on the half hour with Brown and Wright trading passes sending Widerman clear, but AGAIN the ball took a bobble, and went harmlessly out for a goal kick. Furniss was called into play for the first real time on 40 mins, when a ball up the left was crossed in and pushed away to the edge of the box by the keeper, who quickly got up to push away the follow up.
As half time approached the Blues forced a couple of chaces, Wright was fouled again on 42 mins, Brown whipped the free kick in, but Miles put the ball wide of the post from 6 yards. The host keeper made a great save a minute later, Higginbottom played in Shane Bennett whose shot was superbly tipped over. From the resulting corner there was a scramble in the packed area, the ball came out to Higginbottom whose first time shot was blocked. HALF TIME AFC Grouse...0 Boythorpe...0.
Boythorpe started strongly from the restart, winning a free kick in a dangerous position, but the keeper was alert, and gathered the ball well, low down. He was made busy again on 52 mins, Widerman pushing the defence back with a strong run before feeding the ball to Walton, whose first time shot was clawed away by the keeper for a corner.
Bonson made a great last gasp tackle as Grouse threatened on 55 mins, winning the ball just inside his own box as the striker prepared to shoot. The corner though was well cleared by Goodwin who was proving to be a rock at the back. Boythorpe took the lead on 62 mins, Brown was fed the ball out on the right, he beat a defender before firing a shot come cross in that the keeper pushed away only as far as WIDERMAN who was lurking in the 6 yard box unmarked, he took his time before rolling the ball over the line for 1-0.
Moments later Lee Walton required attention pulling up, holding his calf, suffering from cramp. He failed to shake it off, and was replaced by his brother Paul on 67 mins. We had a comedy moment on 69 mins when the referee made a well timed tackle on Widerman after losing his footing, but a minute later another grat save by the Grouse keeper went to Wright who almost made the game safe, chipping the ball cheekily over the keeper, and a defender only to be denied by another defender who had gone in behind HIM, to head off the line.
Furniss then made a great save at the other end, as the home side started to push for an equaliser as time began to run out. Bonsons thigh then began to tighten up as the pitch began to take its toll on the players, and he was replacd by Hardy with just 10 mins left on the clock. Scott Bennett had a golden opportunity on 81 mins being sent clear on the half way line, as he and Wright bore down on goal the keeper rushed to the edge of the box to make a fine save. Widerman went close on 83 mins, a raking through ball by Shane Bennett was taken on but the in form striker fired across the keeper and just wide.
Furniss was on his toes again on 84 mins, a break from Grouse was well saved low down at full stretch by the Blues keeper who was having the busiest of the closing minutes, when soon after had to catch a free kick into the box while under pressure. But it was the HOME keeper who had the bigest break of the day with just 2 mins remaining, Wright raced clear of 2 defenders and was crudely HACKED down by the keeper who had raced out of his box. The ref could, and SHOULD have given him a straight RED, but gave him the break of the day with just a yellow.
Furniss made the points safe for the Blues in the final minute, blocking a shot from a low cross, just 3 yards from his goal line giving the hosts a corner. The keeper (who shouldnt have been on the pitch) came up for the corner, but the defence held firm and the points were won. FULL TIME AFC Grouse...0 Boythorpe...1. Although a very scrappy disjointed game Boythorpe dug in and ground out a resullt, keeping them WELL in touch with the leaders (and RED HOT favourites for the title....according to the Derbyshire Times..Hmmm!!), Renishaw, who kindly came over to watch our game and BOOST the attendence, THANKS!! as the Top of the League clash with Holmebrook Valley fell foul of the frost.

If the game Sunday Versus Winster Wasps (away) is on, we will be required to play BOTH fixtures against them on the SAME day. The games will be 2 halves of 35 mins per game, with a 10 mins to half hour rest in between. As we will be required to PAY the refs fee for one of the games, players are reminded that DOUBLE subs will be collected. An e-mail recieved yesterday from the council stated that THEY are happy to extend the availabillity of the facillities (ground and changing rooms) till 16th MAY, so to ease the crippling backlog of fixtures. All the cancellations are taking thier toll on our Manager Dave Benett, as the picture shows.

Benny again made changes, so as to give his squad maximum opportunities as the Blues travelled to a side that they YET have to lose to after SIX previous attempts. The first chance came thier way following good work by Widerman, finding Scott Bennett in space, the striker found his way blocked and he won a free kick in a dangerous area. Widerman took the free kick himself, but it was well saved by the host keeper.
Brown sent Wright clear moments later, but the striker had his effort pushed wide for a corner. The lively home striker was causing an out of sorts Higginbottom trouble with his aggressive strong running on and off the ball, and he got wide after 9 mins and crossed to the back post, but the effort drifted out for a goal kick. He got beyond Higginbottom again 2 mins later and was HACKED down by a wild challenge for a penalty. Furniss saved the spot kick diving to his right and was back up in a flash to push away the rebound effort, and Goodwin completed the clearance.
Straight back down the other end, Megyesi found Walton who put in a wicked low cross, but the chance was not converted. Boythorpe struggled to find any fluidditty, and were constantly pushed back into thier own half with the robust Wingfield midfield releasing the front men at every opportunity. Benny brought on Bonson to replace the struggling Higginbottom, with the intention of nullifying the GOBBY Wingfield front man who was a constant thorn in the Boythorpe flesh.
Boythorpe went close on the half hour, a Lee Walton, free kick was blocked before the winger crossed again causing the host keeper to FLAP at the ball, but it was cleared from danger. Wingfield took the lead on 32 mins courtesy of a WHITEHEAD own goal. a chance was superbly blocked by Goodwin and from the resulting corner, the ball was worked into the Boythorpe box, and although Furniss called the ball his, the defender slid in and poked the ball into the corner of the net.
Boythorpe almost levelled matters 2 mins later when Widerman picked out Brown, but the Skipper fired over. Things got worse for the visitors seconds later, a great ball was slipped through the Boythorpe defence, and GUESS WHO latched onto it bringing the ball under control before slipping it past the hesitant Furniss for 2-0 Boythorpe still pushed forward and hit a low free kick inches wide of the post, before the home side went close AGAIN with a free kick of thier own from 30 yards, CRASHING against the upright with Furniss well beaten. There was just time for "THE MOUTH ON LEGS" to be yellow carded and was later to be lucky to stay on the pitch as he kept crossing swords with the referee. HALF TIME N.W.M.W....2 BOYTHORPE....0.
Boythorpe pushed forward from the restart, and a Walton run won a corner, the ball was whipped in, but the keeper punched clear as far as Widerman, but the winger wanted too long and was robbed of the ball. They were handed a GOLD PLATED opportunity on 48 mins when they were awarded a penalty. Wright took the spot kick but it struck the post and went behind, but the referee had spotted several home players encroaching into the box and ordered a re-take, much to the annoyance of the hosts. In fact the No 4 found his name taken when he argued the case too strongly. Wright spotted the ball again, but this time the keeper read it well and pushed the effort away.
Both sides created chances, but it was the Blues who were begining to get back into the game and Widerman went close heading a fine Walton cross into the grateful keepers arms. Benny introduced Shane Bennett on the hour for Widerman as Boythorpe STARTED to make more headway in midfield. Whitehead had to be replaced after picking up a NASTY gash on his knee requiring 10 stitches following a challenge on the half way line after 68 mins. And the breakthrough Boythorpe craved came somewhat fortuitously on 70 minutes. A classic through ball by Brown was chased by WRIGHT, and as the home keeper raced out of his goal to clear, he HAMMERED the ball against the strikers chest and the ball sailed back beyond him and into the net.
This inspired the Blues to push forward and started to catch Wingfield on the hop, but had to stay aware as the home side could still be dangerous. Furniss made a couple of quality saves to keep Boythope in the hunt, and another home chance was spurrned when Golden boy put a decent chance wide with just the keeper to beat. This was his last contribution, as he was subbed seconds later.
Bonson went close as time began to run out when he latched onto a ball over by Goodwin, but a defender HACKED the ball away for a corner. The late equaliser came on 88 mins when Walton put over yet another fine cross, the keeper pushed the ball away, only as far as a home defender, who was powerless to avoid heading the ball into his own net as he tried to keep the ball away from Megyesi, who was well placed to put the ball home himself if needed. Boythorpe in fact had a chance to steal ALL THREE POINTS when a needless free kick for pushing was given away 20 yards from goal , Brown lifted the ball over the wall but the effort drifted inches over, and the points were shared.
