Back to back fixtures meant Fanzines were Burton Joyce’s opposition at the Sports Ground, after last weeks deserved defeat the Champions had a lot to prove especially after such a poor start to 2010. The home side lined up with GK.John RB.Meeks LB.D Beatty CB.Art CB.Skip RM.Ang LM.Keith CM.Smithy CM.Sheppo CF.Robbie CF.Crofty with Chris Stewart, Chris Parrot and the very very very very very very very unlucky Liam Beatty on the bench meaning that Meeksy had to have a blinder to warrant the in form Liam Beatty being dropped! Fanzine themselves did a bit of a BJ bringing in Doncaster Rovers legend and current Arnold Town star Rob Gill up front, question is could Art and Rob’s best mate Skip keep him at bay?
The game started much the same as previous weeks lacking the cutting edge of the pre Christmas form that had lead an unbeaten 2009 but that’s not to say that Fanzines didn’t knock the ball around well on an uncharacteristically poor pitch at the sports ground. The one clear chance of the early exchanges fell the Fanzines super star who capitalised on a rare defensive mix up to beat John in goal however the ball bounced back off the post to safety.
Burton Joyce managed to start to get the ball down with everything going through Sheppo in the BJ midfield, he rolled back the years as he just plonked himself in front of the back four giving a much healthier shape than we had last week. Both sets of forwards struggled to get hold the ball and when they did get hold of it they lacked support to create any real chances. Up step Robbie Mawer to change all that when he received the ball to ghost past two or three defenders and create pace to fire a shot hard and low that the keeper could only parry into the path of Crofty to score his first goal of 2010. 1:0.
Towards the end of the first half the home side began to press forward and it also saw the replacement of injured Dan Beatty who had put some great firm tackles in by middle Beatty, Liam deservedly making an early entry into the game at left back. A couple of half chances fell to Keith back stick after crosses from Josh and Robbie however some superb keeping from last weeks linesman kept the away side in the game. A rejuvenated Richard Meeks at full back and an in form Liam Beatty on the other side offered great support to Art and Skip who were holding off the challenge well from the Fanzines front men.
The second half started with Burton Joyce keeping it tight especially in the midfield now, Martin managed to up his game after an un-Smithy like first half, we knew he was back though when within a couple of minutes he was giving his name to the ref and getting yet another £8 fine. Angelo created his one chance when he peeled off the centre back and brought down a fantastic Keith cross inside the six yard box but the keeper got down well to save with his feet.
A rare second half attack lead to the comical moment when Fanzines Rob Gill don the goggles and swimming cap to tumble from the high board screaming penalty, ill give him the benefit of the doubt as I’ve regularly seen Birdy taken out by the sniper hiding in the Bowling green fence. However that was the highlight of Fanzines second half as they never really got hold of the game like last week. I think that may have something to do with the outstanding performance by BJ legend Art Luetkemeier who I don’t think will ever have a bigger test at this level and he won and judge everything to perfection. Just proving that had booze and women (maybe not so much women) not distracted him in his younger days he could have performed at much higher standard.
The miss of the game came when Robbie Mawer broke through down the left after a decent pass from Liam Beatty into his path and after beating the last man it left him and Smithy through on the keeper. You were begging for Robbie to go it alone but the unselfish and decent lad he is he squared the ball to Smithy who had a open goal, to Smithy's credit he did hit the target, however his shot was hit softer than Cadbury's dairy milk that had been left in the african sun all day under a magnifying glass and that had been half chewed by a small elephant. Allowing the keeper to roll over a couple of times and grasp the ball preventing the inevitable goal.
Burton Joyce cancelled out Fanzines second half with a much more professional half than we’ve seen for a number of weeks and the game was won late on when Smithy came out of defense with the ball after a perfectly timed last gasp challenge from Andy Davies on the edge of the box and played in Robbie Mawer who found himself one on one with Fanzines mom keeper, he coolly rounded him and slotted home well to finish the game and make it 2:0 with his first of the season.
A much better performance second half against a good side who potentially could have threatened at any moment especially with the class they had up front. And if you wanted to know Meeksy did justify his selection (just) by having an pretty outstanding game at right back and he didn't put one channel ball out for a throw in the whole game.
