Burton Joyce First : Team Information

About Us

2008-09

The season was one of the most successful in the clubs history with the second double in two seasons after winning the league title for the third consecutive season and the EMPAL cup for the second time. Tim Shepperson lead the team in his first season of management but didnt get off to the greatest start taking 5 games to record their first victory. The bad run also included an early exit of the intermediate county cup, the first time the club had been involved at this level. The league form picked up from the bad start and only one more defeat in the entire campaign saw Burton Joyce record their fifth and sixth trophies in 4 years. The past seasons form also encouraged new faces from the Saturdays leagues with Andy Davies formally of Arnold Town and Gedling Town join along with his Gedling Town team mate David Wardle taking position between the sticks. Just proving the attraction of playing for a club who have achieved success.

2007-08

Probably the hardest job in Sunday morning football after the departure of Notts County legend Dean Yates fell to Burton Joyce legend Nick West in the 07-08 season however Westy seem to take this in his stride. Some major summer signings saw Graham Epps and a number of Heanor Town players heading for BJ as well as young star in the making Josh Croft. The beginning of the season saw the departure of Captain Gary Dicksons to Southwell Rugby Club which to the appointment of new Captain Adam Bird. Once again a slow start to the season led to a second round exit of the league cup to lower league side Trent All Stars who were beaten semi finalists in the end. BJ who were at one stage 11 points off the league leaders caught the pack up to claim their second championship on the final day of the season winning at Total Reclaims with Fanzine losing to Freeman and Mitchell in dramatic fashion as director of football Steve Beal relayed the news to the 'A' team who were as surprised as anyone! Burton Joyces most successful season to date was completed in the Junior County Cup final with an extra time victory over Man In Space at Greenwood Meadows ground. This lead to jubilant scenes from the bus load of traveling fans who had made the trip from Burton Joyce.

2006-07

Dean Yates began his second season in charge of Burton Joyce with one aim in mind to claim that illustrious first title for the club after missing out so devastatingly the previous year. The departure of Keeper John Cherry was a major loss during pre season however Rossi stepped up to the plate well with a solid defence in front of him. Early exits in both cup competitions (probably having something to do with Sheppo's stag do in Prague) meant the league was the only possibility of silverware for the most part of the season. The introduction of Robbie Mawer up front replaced Kul who left part way through the year kept the title challenge alive and with two games of the season left Burton Joyce sealed their first crown at home after a comfortable victory against Nottingham Law School. The same game also was the occasion when Greg (oil tanker) Walton retired from football after a career that involved spells with Burton Albion. The biggest loss to the club was the resignation of manager Dean Yates and his ass man Steve Beal who lead the club to their first major honours in their history.

2005-06

Rumours circulated the small village of Burton Joyce that Notts County legend Dean Yates had been approached by former Burton Joyce full back Steve Beal about the possibilty of taking the helm of the 1st team after the resignation of 1st team manager Andy Ryan. The rumours were confirmed at the AGM by the new Ass Man Steve Beal while Deano was abroad possibly on the look out for some European flair, however Dean and Steve's first signing in an attempt to go one better than the previous year and win the league title was no nonsense left back Alan Moore. Two more players joined the young Burton Joyce outfit to offer some invaluable experience who were former Burton Albion star Greg Walton at centre back and son of Notts legend Steve Cherry, John. A competitive start to the season saw BJ challenging on three fronts and looking possible favourites to win everything. However champions West End were also in the hunt for all three trophies leading to one of the most exciting finishes in the Empal's history. The increased success of BJ and the introduction of a high profile manager also lead to soaring attendances with games towards the end of the season needing ropes to prevent the officials being obstructed by the spectators and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say up to 100 people would turn up for the more important games especially against West End. Burton Joyce added to the squad with the signing of Carlton Towns Daniel Cane from Benefica. A semi final vistory over West End in the Empal cup saw Burton Joyce reach their first final for four years and their first in the Empal cup. However a 5:4 thrilling defeat for BJ at Gedling Towns ground in the County cup final in front of more than 300 spectators making an unbelievable noise for the players on the pitch was the pinnacle of that season and even though the result went against us it was the most surrial game to play. A defeat to West End in the penultimate game of the season to West End allowed them to pick a deserved double up. However at around 1pm on a Sunday morning in early May Dean and Steve lead a Burton Joyce side to their first trophy winning 4:2 against Fox and Crown which was the start of haul of trophies that at the club unimagined and possible not believable by most involved with the club.

2004-05

A season of consolidation was needed after the shock departure of 'A' team manager AJ during the summer. Former 'A' team centre forward Andy Ryan took to the helm with Dougie acting as his number two. Exits in the quarter finals of both cups lead to a steady league season which was just what the club needed. The one major signing was defender Glen (aka Al Murrey) who offered a bit of bite to the young defensive line BJ had on show. A late push in the league campaign actually lead to a 2nd place, the highest league finish up until that point in the Empal 1st division. The end of the season saw interim manager Andy Ryan and his assistant Dougie step down after a successful spell at management and also long standing goal keeper Luke Benner left the club. Andy and Dougie moved upstairs in more mature roles at the club.
