Crown Newlaithes Ladies 11 v 0 Penrith AFC Development

Victory!

The Ladies returned to Rickerby Park for their 1st home game in over 3 months to face Penrith AFC Development. Abbie, Beth, Carly, Holly, Jemma and Katie J were unavailable for Newlaithes. However Stacey made a welcome return in midfield and Emma Smith finally made her long-awaited debut, starting in central defence. Unfortunately, Penrith only had 8 players available so the match was shortened to 35 minutes each way.

Newlaithes set the tone early on and as expected dominated proceedings. Faye came close with two efforts before breaking the deadlock in the 8th minute when she intercepted a goal kick to smash the ball into the bottom corner. Newlaithes continued to dominate possession but were not playing anything like their best. Nevertheless Pat came close with a piledriver from the right that went into the side netting and Laura W and Katie O had efforts well saved by the Penrith keeper. In the 19th minute, Katie O made it two, when she got onto the end of Faye’s cross from the right to volley home from close range. Four minutes later and it was three, when Pat played a diagonal ball to Katie O, who set it up for Faye to hammer home her second. 2½ minutes later, Faye got her hat-trick when she slotted home a nice through ball from Stacey. Penrith battled hard but apart from the occasional foray into the Newlaithes half, Katie M was more or less a spectator, with the Newlaithes defence mopping everything up. The score remained 4-0 at half time, with the Newlaithes players disappointed with their performance.

The second half started in the same vein with Claire on for Laura W. The Newlaithes players began to play with more purpose as they passed the ball around the Penrith players. Emma swapped positions with Faye and she caused the Penrith defence all kinds of problems with her strong running. The Penrith keeper made a succession of excellent saves before Stacey broke the 2nd half deadlock when she finished in the bottom corner with the outside of her boot from just inside the box. Less than two minutes later and Emma crossed from the right for Claire to head into the air. Katie O headed back across goal for Claire to head in from close range. Four minutes later, Katie O broke down the left to square to Claire to score her second. Another two minutes and Claire turned provider when she laid the ball out to Pat on the right. Pat attacked the box to hammer the ball past the keeper.  Another two minutes passed when Emma won the ball in midfield to lob the keeper from 30 yards. In the 62nd minute, Jade won the ball at the back and passed outside to Chelsea who played down the line to Katie O. Katie charged past two Penrith defenders to smash the ball home from the left hand side of the box. In the 64th minute, the final goal came when Faye followed up to finish from close range after the Penrith keeper had saved Claire’s shot.

The final score was 11-0 but the scoreline isn’t really important. What is more pleasing was the way that the Newlaithes players stepped up a gear after a lacklustre first half to play with some real quality in the second half. Hats off to the Penrith players who kept going right to the end with a special mention to Lucy Ballantyne who produced an outstanding performance in the Penrith goals. Newlaithes player of the match was debutant Emma, who was assured in defence, caused all kinds of problems when in attack and kept things solid in the middle when she dropped back into midfield towards the end. Pat and Katie O also deserve a special mention for creating havoc down the wings and not forgetting Faye, who once again put in a typically robust performance, scoring four goals.

Next match is at home to Harraby Ladies, who are unbeaten so far this season.

Carlisle City 0 V 6 Crown Newlaithes Ladies

Victory!

After much arranging and re-arranging, the ladies had their first match of the year at the Sheepmount. The pitch was reasonably firm but was very uneven and full of holes that had to filled in before the start. As with the previous match v City, City only had 9 players available but they had a reasonably strong, experienced line-up. Newlaithes had 6 players missing, with Abbie, Emma, Holly, Jemma, Katie J & Stacey unavailable.

Newlaithes pressured from the start and the first goal came after three minutes when Pat burst free down the right after a nice through ball from Laura W. She shot low, from the edge of the box to score at the far post. A minute later and it was 2 - Laura W had a shot blocked and Sarah's follow-up shot across goal was helped in by a City defender despite her efforts to stab it clear. The third came after seven minutes, when Faye attacked a corner from the right to score with a superb header into the back of the net. Was this to be a repeat of the previous meeting? Not quite, as City became more lively. They were quick to close down the ball and Newlaithes conceded possession too often. Newlaithes also grew increasingly frustrated as time after time they were adjudged offside as the well-organised City defence stepped out. The off-side trap - probably the first time we have come up against it, so high up the pitch. City began to push forward and won a number of corners but to Newlaithes credit, City were unable to create any real chances as Tasha, Jade, Carly and Chelsea remained rock solid at the back. Despite their frustration, Newlaithes were starting to beat the off-side trap but the stand-in City keeper was playing out of her skin and she made a string of fine saves, notably a 25 yard thunderbolt from Faye. Newlaithes also wasted a number of clear cut chances before they finally added to the score after thirty three minutes when the keeper saved Faye's shot only for Katie O to score from the follow-up. The score remained 4-0 at half-time.

The second half started in similar fashion as time and time again, Newlaithes were given offside, sometimes literally a yard into the City half. Faye was denied at close range by the City keeper but after fifty minutes, Newlaithes got their 5th when sub Laura O controlled the ball well just inside the City half. She spun to put Faye clear and this time Faye shot early to blast the ball past the City keeper. Laura herself then had several good chances but once again the City keeper came to the rescue. The match continued in the same vein for much of the 2nd half as City frequently squeezed the play up to half-way but without troubling Katie M in the Newlaithes goal. In the seventy third minute, Newlaithes got their 6th when Katie O showed quick feet to spin past her marker and blast the ball home from the edge of the area. The score remained the same until the final whistle.

This was the first game for almost two months and the ring-rust was much in evidence. Nevertheless, Newlaithes dominated possession for much of the game as you would expect with a 2 player advantage although they found it difficult at times to play with any sustained rhythm as they were constantly frustrated by a lively and wiley City team that battled right until the end. The bumpy pitch didn't help either but the encouraging fact is the number of chances that the team still created. Sarah, was cool as ever in midfield and it was good to see Katie O looking more like her old self with a lively performance on the left wing. Pat also looked sharp on the right and Laura O caused problems up front when she came on - on another day she might have grabbed a couple of goals.

Player of the match was Faye, who ran her heart out with a typically battling, competitive performance that caused City all kinds of grief.

Away to Kendal-Wattsfield in the cup next week. Well played Ladies!!

Dalton Utd 3 V 2 Crown Newlaithes Ladies

Losers!

The Ladies were away to last year's champions Dalton for their 1st match in 5 weeks. Abbie, Beth, Emma, Katie J, Laura O & Pat were missing but Carly, Chelsea and Stacey returned to the squad.

Newlaithes started the brighter of the two teams and kept possession well. Laura W, Stacey and Faye had several long range efforts but the keeper was equal to the challenge. Dalton tried to feed their forwards with a number of long balls but Katie M was quick to come off her line to gather. Dalton then started to come back into it and they won a corner on the right. Newlaithes failed to clear the ball and they blasted the loose ball home for the opener in the 19th minute. Flashbacks to the collapse at Kendal came flooding back as less than two minutes later, Dalton won a penalty after Katie M had collided with a Dalton striker. The Dalton keeper stepped up to bury the ball in the bottom corner to Katie's right. However this time Newlaithes kept their composure and continued to retain the ball well, forcing Dalton backwards. It only seemed a matter of time before Newlaithes would score but the Dalton keeper was in fine form and the score remained 2-0 at half time.

Newlaithes increased the pressure in the 2nd half with wave after wave of attack forcing Dalton onto the back foot. Their reward came in the 55th minute when Faye linked well with Claire inside the box. Her hard and low shot was saved brilliantly by the diving Dalton keeper at the near post. The resulting corner from the right came to Faye, whose shot was again saved by the Dalton keeper but Sarah was on hand to finish from close range. Faye came close again when she clipped the outside of the keeper's left hand post from 25 yards. Laura W then had a low shot fumbled out for a corner. With less than 15 minutes left it was all Newlaithes although Dalton still threatened with the occasional counter-attack but in the main Holly, Jade and Carly were rock solid at the back. Laura W also played a blinder as a wing-back on the left after Chelsea was forced to leave the pitch with an achilles injury. However Newlaithes had a scare when Dalton broke down the right and their winger whipped in a low cross across the face of goal. Fortunately for Newlaithes their striker was unable to guide it into the net. Then came the sucker punch - Holly got caught in a tangle with a loan striker about 30 yards out from the Newlaithes goal and the ball went loose towards the Newlaithes box. Katie M got there 1st but the advancing striker intercepted her attempted clearance and stroked the ball calmy into the empty net. Straight from the kick-off Faye took the ball past three Dalton players before being tripped about 30 yards out. She struck a magnificent free-kick that flew straight as an arrow into the top corner to the keepers left. So it was as you were and Newlaithes continued to press until the end for an equaliser but it just wasn't forthcoming. The Dalton keeper was on top form and their defence was difficult to break down.

Despite the scoreline, this was possibly the team's best performance this season in terms of consistency and quality. Sarah and Stacey's link up play was excellent, with Tasha in fearsome mood, playing just behind them. Up front, Faye in particular caused all kinds of problems as she bustled and battled against the Dalton defence. One parent suggested that it was the best she had ever seen the team play and after the game, the Dalton manager was quick to praise the team and admitted that his team had been lucky. It was certainly a big step up the learning curve and things look promising for the new year. Keep it going ladies!!!

Thanks to Dalton for the post match hospitality and thanks also to the parents who drove the 160 mile round trip :-)

Next match is Abbeytown at home on 17th Jan - river permitting... ;-)
