Layton Institute Jnrs 2 V 2 Stable Bar

Honours Even...

Layton Institute Juniors 2 Stable Bar 2

Yet another disappointing performance matched with another disappointing result.

Early Goal

This week it was the Laser Blues turn to get off to a flyer, after falling behind to early goals in recent weeks this was a relief for manager Greg Wallace who has so far been unimpressed with his sides start to the season.

A set piece was created the first moment of joy for Layton as Paul Hallett whipped the ball in only for a Stable Bar defender to put past his own keeper after only 5 minutes.

Goal!  1-0

Leaky Defence

A patched up defence constituting of first starts for Mahon and Moore looked shaky when under pressure and that pressure told late on in the first half as Stable grabbed a deserved equaliser.

Goal!  1-1

On Top

Layton were on top for the majority of the first half without really exerting themselves or even getting into second gear and that proved costly with the lack of chances being created meaning the teams went in level at half time.

A frustrated and disappointed Layton boss made two changes at the break with Scott Grimes and Jacob Peake replacing Ryan Mahon and Nick Tosh to revert to a 4-5-1 formation with Peake leading the line.

The changes looked to have paid dividends with a great goal from David Dalton to put The Juniors back in front.

Goal!  2-1

Short Lived

The lead didn't last long and celebrations were short lived after some sloppy defending and an unwillingness to close down attacking players meant that Stable Bar were back on terms through a wicked deflection.

Goal!  2-2

Disallowed

Layton pressed for a third and possible winner and thought they had got it.  TWICE!  Two goals from Peter McNicol were, unfairly and after viewing tv replays, incorrectly ruled out so The Laser Blues had to settle for a share of the points again.

Disappointing and frustrating and with a performance like this, there will no doubt be changes for the next important match in the Gledhill Cup.

Ratings

D.Bunce      7    Didn't do much wrong and made a couple of vital saves.
R.Bonney    6    Caught in possession too many times but a decent display.
M.Wilson    7    Did very well until he had to come off.
R.Mahon     6    Good display for his first start.  Showed some assured touches in an unfamiliar position.
R.Moore     6    Looked good at centre back and again, out of position but did well.
J.Rice          7    Led the defence well and had to be at his best.  Wasn't but a decent display none the less.
P.Hallett      7    A quiet game by Paul's standards but delivered the ball for the first goal.
D.McNicol  6    The skipper won't be impressed with this rating or his performance.  Very quiet.
D.Dalton      8    Another great perfomance by Dalton who has impressed since getting back in the starting line up. MOTM
P.McNicol   7    Difficult to get into the game with little chances created but worked hard and was a constant threat.
N.Tosh        6    A low rating, not his fault.  no service and nothing to work with.

Subs:

J.Peake      7    Looked a constant threat and pushed well for a start next week.
A.Hodgkinson    7    Great to see at his tricky best again.  Only had 20 minutes but was very effective.
S.Grimes    6    Decent performance.  Tried too many tricks and lost possession too often.

Layton Institute Juniors 3 v 3 Walkabout Celtic

Honours Even...

Layton Institute Juniors 3 Walkabout Celtic 3

Another slow start and more dropped points for Layton as poor finishing and errors cost dear.

Weak

A drizzly day at Moor Park and a promise of a better performance served well for the pre match ritual.

The warm ups went well and morale was high.... then the game kicked off.

Pretty much straight away Scott Grimes was caught out by poor positioning and a smart ball inside him was picked up by the Celtics number 9, Gino Ginelli. The big Italian part time ice-cream man waltzed past 2 defenders as if they weren't there and pulled the ball back to a waiting colleague. His tame, mis-hit effort trickled back to the big number 9 who (from a clearly offside position) tucked home for 1-0.

Goal! 0-1

Rocked for the second game in a row Layton attempted to get straight back into the game and almost did and but for poor finishing, would.

Walkabout Celtic then had a throw in, deep into the Juniors half and the long throw which was left by club captain David McNicol was flicked on by the Walkabout number 14. Usually reliable Bunce misjudged the ball and Ginelli slotted home for number 2.

Goal! 0-2

Lifeline

The Laser Blues pushed on to get back in the game and attack after attack gave no joy and no restbite for the vistors defence.

Then the referee handed the Juniors a lifeline by awarding a penalty for handball. Skipper, McNicol, left the duty for the returning Dalton who hammered home convincingly for 2-1.

Goal! 1-2

Momentum, impetus and passion on their side Layton went searching for the equaliser before half-time but were undone again by sloppy defending that let the Celtics in for their 3rd.

Goal! 1-3

Goals galore and Layton on the attack again. Grimes atoned for an earlier error and threaded through a beautiful ball for Pete McNicol to take in his stride and stroke home with a plomb.

Goal! 2-3

All this and before the 25 minute mark and a tactical switch saw Rice enter the fray for Hodgkinson to switch formation to a 3-5-2 formation that worked a treat.

The scond half began and it was all Layton. More missed opportunities and more frustration for the Layton boss.

Grimes completed the comeback with a fine finish after a lovely ball in by Peake.

Goal! 3-3

The final change saw the introduction of Tosh on in a striker role and the big lad had some very astutue touches and gave The Juniors a different approach that will be used again in the near future.

Another poor result but a much better performance.

FC Newton 3 v 2 Layton Institute Juniors

Losers!

Newton 3 Layton Institute Juniors 2

A very poor start for the Laser Blues who were 2-0 down within the first 20 minutes.

Skipper

Captain for the evening, James Rice, began the evening by coming close with a bullett header from a corner that rocked the bar and a second close after that was held by the Newton keeper.

Then came the first goal and totally against the run of play. Rice was caught dithering on the ball, was robbed by the Newton striker who rounded keeper Bunce to slot home for 1-0.

Goal! 1-0

The Juniors pushed forward through Hodgkinson, Slater, Peake and Ferguson but to no avail and 10 minutes later the Newton lead was doubled when a hopeful long ball was allowed to bounce in the box and when Truelove swung a wild boot a penalty was given and duly converted.

Goal! 2-0

Layton continued to rally together to get back into the game. Tempers flared on the sideline and also on the pitch when Peake eventually slotted home to bring the Laser Blues back into the game.

Goal 2-1

After the break, Layton pushed on and were frustrated time after time by poor finishing and general timewasting.

Late on in the game and The Juniors were caught on the counter after piling players forward for the equaliser. A pacey attack down the left with the ball stroked accross the six yard line and tapped home to restore Newtons 2 goal lead.

Goal! 3-1

Layton threw caution to the wind and men forward. Several more wasted chances. Ferguson, Pete McNicol, Peake, Slater and Hodgkinson were all guilty until Peake eventually scrambled home for a last gasp chance of a draw.

Goal!  3-2

More chances ensued and even though it looked like an equaliser would come, nothing transpired and the final whistle brough the game to a close and and also an end to an unbeaten record that stretched back to November 2007.

Layton have work to do for promotion this season.
