Newton 3 Layton Institute Juniors 2

A very poor start for the Laser Blues who were 2-0 down within the first 20 minutes.

Captain for the evening, James Rice, began the evening by coming close with a bullett header from a corner that rocked the bar and a second close after that was held by the Newton keeper.

Then came the first goal and totally against the run of play. Rice was caught dithering on the ball, was robbed by the Newton striker who rounded keeper Bunce to slot home for 1-0.

Goal! 1-0

The Juniors pushed forward through Hodgkinson, Slater, Peake and Ferguson but to no avail and 10 minutes later the Newton lead was doubled when a hopeful long ball was allowed to bounce in the box and when Truelove swung a wild boot a penalty was given and duly converted.

Goal! 2-0

Layton continued to rally together to get back into the game. Tempers flared on the sideline and also on the pitch when Peake eventually slotted home to bring the Laser Blues back into the game.

Goal 2-1

After the break, Layton pushed on and were frustrated time after time by poor finishing and general timewasting.

Late on in the game and The Juniors were caught on the counter after piling players forward for the equaliser. A pacey attack down the left with the ball stroked accross the six yard line and tapped home to restore Newtons 2 goal lead.

Goal! 3-1

Layton threw caution to the wind and men forward. Several more wasted chances. Ferguson, Pete McNicol, Peake, Slater and Hodgkinson were all guilty until Peake eventually scrambled home for a last gasp chance of a draw.

Goal!  3-2

More chances ensued and even though it looked like an equaliser would come, nothing transpired and the final whistle brough the game to a close and and also an end to an unbeaten record that stretched back to November 2007.

Layton have work to do for promotion this season.
