Cliffe Woods Colts 4 v 2 Newington Village FC

Losers!

Newington Village opened the new league campaign with a defeat at the hands of last seasons Division 5 Champions Cliffe Woods Colts.

With a near fulll strength squad available Newington fielded a strong starting 11 and took the game to Cliffe Woods, with Newington having the best of the early exchanges. Cliffe Woods though always looked dangerous when their midfield had the ball at their feet, but a combination of Newington midfield and defence was always able to keep the ball away from the Cliffe Woods strikers.

It was Newington that opened the scoring, when a long ball from Ian Smith deceived the Cliffe Woods defence and Shaun Speller ran on to hold off the challenge of a chasing defender to put Newington 1-0 up.

This set back stunned Cliffe Woods into action, their strikers were seeing more of the ball and Tony Jarrett in the Newington goal was now the by far the busier keeper. Jarrett made a succession of good blocks and dominated his area to maintain the Newington lead.

With just a couple of minutes remaining in the first half Jarrett was beaten, when a low drive by Jason Harrison beat him at the near post, Jarrett unsighted as his defenders tried to block the incoming shot.

Darren Delport retired injured at half time, to be replaced by James Reynolds in the centre of midfield. Newington were pinned back in their own half for long periods of play in the early stages of the second half, but were able to break on several occasions. In fact Shaun Speller will be disappointed to have not converted at least one of his chances when one-on-one with the Cliffe Woods keeper, though to be fair on both breaks the keeper made good saves.

Shortly after the second of these opportunities Cliffe Woods took the lead as a well worked move left Cliffe Woods Phil Swatton to drive past Jarrett from just inside the area.

Leigh Wildish, having covered a lot of ground in the first half, and looking tired, was withdrawn and Justin Meyer brought on in the wide left position for his debut. Meyer helped to give Newington some additional width, which they were able to utilise to create the equalizer, Mark Rothery, cutting in from the left was fouled, and after allowing play to continue momentarily to check advantage, a free-kick was awarded to Newington.

While the Cliffe Woods defence arqued about the decision, and the keeper organised his wall, the ref allowed Andy Turnham to take a quick free kick to make the score 2-2.

Newington were back in the game, but unfortunately werent able to consolidate. Injuries to Luke Austin, replaced by Richard Woolston and to Mark Rothery meant that the team balance was disrupted. Cliffe Woods gained control in the important midfield positions and the Newington defence were unable to cope with the constant pressure.

It was of little surprise when Cliffe Woods gained the advantage to go 3-2 up through Wayne Hughes and finally killed off any chance of a revival as Richard Arthur scored the fourth to give Cliffe Woods a little flattering 4-2 scoreline.

Newington: Jarrett, Barry, Austin (Woolston), Watson, Smith; Rothery, Delport (J.Reynolds), Hussey, Wildish (Meyer); Speller, Turnham. - Goals:- Speller, Turnham - MoM:- Jarrett
