League fixture, 10.30am KO - Sunday 12 September 2010
@ Home.

Ollie Hurrey took a leaf out of Harry Redknapp's book when he described this result as a "great defeat" and also showed Redknapp-like canniness in the transfer-market with the unveiling of a few superb additions to The Ship squad in readiness for the start of the season next week. Man-of-the-Match, debut centre-back Scot - Kevin Follon - brought a touch of Colin Hendry to the Ship back-line and had an excellent game alongside a rejuvenated, slim-line Adam Hurrey. Overall, the back four (marshalled superbly by the return of Simon Stevens and his professional goalkeeping kit from Australia) was as solid as it has been in a long time. Kieran Cross rampaged down the right and showed superb touches, while the industry of Yuki and debutant Iain in midfield freed up fellow new-boy Neil to lend his guile in the hole. Anthony was a willing runner on the left and Quinn overlapped well, with Adam Chambers unlucky not to score against an in-form opposition keeper. Tom came on and held the ball up brilliantly and Rich Wakerley doing well replacing the consistently good Pete at right-back.
The scoreline was no reflection of a game that saw the Ship link up superbly on a number of occasions and create numerous chances. A rock-solid defence and alert keeper meant The Ship were rarely troubled and Neil, Anthony and Kieran all came close to finishing off excellent moves in the first-half. It was much the same in the second with Ollie Hurrey coming on to scuff a very decent chance wide and the Fridge keeper pulling off good saves to deny Adam Chambers, Yuki and their defence/post somehow kept out Anthony after brilliant play by Kieran down the right. Simon had very little to do and was only beaten by a good free-kick that sneaked in the far post to give the Fridge an undeserved win.
Pre-season results never mean much, especially with so many new players joing the squad and Hurrey is very confident indeed of choosing a squad for next week's first league game that can get The Ship off to a flyer.

The Ship's pre-season transferred from the smooth tight pitches of 5-a-side at the Wandle to the wide-open, cabbage patch of Riverside Lands worst with surprisingly good effect. After nearly 16 phone calls from players lost in Chiswick, 16 players eventually arrived to sift through the old kit bag, dreaming of the brand spanking new Adidas kit on order. A sprinkling of Ship old boys formed the spine but with a whole host of new lads taing the pitch for the first time it was clearly going to take time to gel. There was nothing to blame other than Adam Hurrey's stinking hangover for Kew Antigua's first-half double strikes and there was still some great signs coming from The Ship's new look side that eventually culminated in a superb goal. The lively Chris Boland on the right sent over a glorious cross for the hard-working Alex to nod in an excellent header and it was a well-deserved reply. Yuki and Jon worked hard in midfield with Ronan and Rob linking up well on the left but they couldn't add to the tally before half-time. The Ship rang the changes at half-time and although Kew added to the score-line with an unstoppable free-kick and a well-worked headed goal, The Ship showed enough to suggest that with more pre-season friendlies in the pipeline, they'll be more than ready for the new season. Chris Boland missed a penalty that he'd won himself (the one and only time that Hurrey will ever hand one over...) and their keeper pulled off a stunning save to prevent Tom from scoring a header. Rodrigo brought some much needed size and presence to midfield (and displayed some fantastically dramatic, Mexican sportsmanship when trying to win a penalty), Anthony showed great pace on the left, Judd unfortunately pulled a thigh (while sending a pin-point through-ball) and all looked good on their debuts. The future's bright, the future's Adidas.
