Dragons Fire, Too Hot For Lions!

Losers!

Zion FC suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of The Dragons. The 8-4 scoreline embarrassed the Lions who were lacklustre from start to finish.

The Dragons came out buzzing from the first whistle. They played the ball around well and looked to open up the Zion defence. It didn't take long for them to score, a long range effort defeating Steve Winter in the Lions goal. Winter was then forced into a succession of saves. Despite their attacking prowess, The Dragons were weak defensively and this made for an incredibly open game. Dan Shotton scored a fantastic goal when he latched onto a Tony Dain pass, looping the ball over a defender before blasting it past the keeper. Zion conceded two more goals in a soft manner before Tommy Powell profited from a David Jones pass. At 3-2 Zion thought they were back in the tie, but The Dragons hit the net twice before the break to dent Zion's hopes.

The second half continued in the same vain with Zion compromising to the open game that The Dragons desired. End tio end stuff became a lottery, one which only players in white had tickets for. The score was soon 7-2, before Jones and Powell combined to reduce the deficit slightly. Powell scoring, before Jones got Zion's fourth. the final score was an humiliating 8-4, which ESPN pundits felt was a reflective scoreline on the game.

Tommy Powell caused a stir when he stormed out of his post-match press conference without uttering a word. The ESPN reporter asked him if his side was a spent force, which prompted an angry response as Powell shook his head and walked briskly out of the room. Tony Dain was asked the same question, and his response was philosophical, "I think that a statement like that would not do justice to The Dragons. They were good tonight and played well. It's true we didn't perform to our usual high levels, but it would be wrong to discredit their side, they deserved to win the game." Steve Winter also felt his side were second best, "We weren't on it tonight, it was an end to end match and the team that converted their chances deservedly won the game. They were better than us, simple as that." Real Portslade are Zion's next opponents and the Lions will be hoping to put in a vastly improved performance against them.

Shotton Fires Three As Lions Dominate!

Victory!

Zion FC smashed five goals past Bike Track Cosmos sending them to the summit of the Premier League. A hattrick from Dan Shotton and goals from David Jones and Brett Joyce gave the Lions three points and a healthy looking goal difference.

A heart in mouth moment for the away fans happened from kick off when Dan Shotton mis-controlled the pass from kick off, Steve Winter however, saved the defenders blushes with a fantastic save low to his left. Bike Track then found themselves completely under the cosh as David Jones and Brett Joyce ran them ragged. Jones opened the scoring after great play by Joyce. The lead should have been extended on several occasions. Good saves from the Bike track keeper and the woodwork delayed the inevitable. When the goal came it was Shotton who scored it. Brett Joyce found him with a good through ball, and the big defender managed to put the ball home on the second time of asking. Tony Dain and Winter performed brilliantly throughout the first half with great saves, and saving tackles and interceptions. The first half clean sheet, masked Zion's inability to find a more clinical streak in front of goal. Their advantage really should have been a lot greater.

Zion were almost made to pay for their squandered chances. Bike Track managed to grab an early goal to put the pressure on when a long range effort finally breached Winter's goal. The Lions responded well with Dan Shotton re-enstating the two goal advantage, this time Jones provided the assist. Brett Joyce then showed great pace turning a clearance into a goal as he latched onto Shotton's defensive work and ran the length of the pitch before showing the composure to tcuk the ball past the keeper. Shotton then completed his hattrick when he tapped home after more impressive build up play by Joyce. A late consolation wasn't enough for Bike track to get themselves back in the game and Zion had cruised to victory in some style.

While the media were in a frenzy tipping Zion for the title Steve Winter did his best to keep his teammates grounded with his post match comments, "It was a great result, but a little premature to say that we'll walk the league. We need to concentrate on each game as it comes and not get carried away, but the signs are good so far and we've had a good start to the season. long may that continue." Hattrick hero Dan Shotton feels the side can channel the dissappointment of two seasons without silverware to their advantage, "We've underachieved over the last couple of seasons and the criticism has hurt us, but we'll use that to spur us on to achieve great things this season, we are fully equipped to mount a serious title challenge and we want to keep winning for the fans." The fans will be hoping for another win against The Dragons next week.

You Can Brett On A Good Season!

Victory!

Zion FC got of to a winning start to the new season, as they beat  Premiership newboys Rubber Chickens 5-3. Brett Joyce was on top form producing a great individual performance.

The bookies favourites for the drop are Rubber Chickens and many people tipped Zion to destroy their opposition, however, they were made to work for the result. Both teams approached the game in an attacking manner which resulted in a large amount of goalmouth action. David Jones opened the scoring after he converted a great pass from Brett Joyce. More chances came and went for the Lions before the Chickens equaliser. A shot from outside the area found the bottom corner of the net silencing the home fans. Zion created the greater amount of chances but were often hit on the break by the Rubber Chickens. Steve Winter was on good form keeping out several shots with good saves. the lead was restored shortly before half time, when a well timed through ball by Dan Shotton found Jones who tucked the ball neatly past the keeper.

Rubber Chickens came out for the second half with great intent, and they immediately pulled level again. A solo run down the right culminated with a looped finish that seemed to trickle into the net. This spaked Zion into action, and some great play by Joyce restored Zion's advantage. He dribbled around two defenders before squeezing his shot past the keeper. Winter made some more saves at his end, while Zion were less than clinical at the other. Tony Dain intercepted and then broke forward rounding the keeper before tapping home to give Zion a two goal cushion. Tommy Powell then added to the scoreline with a tap in after great work from Joyce. Winter continued to impress making several top drawer saves, however, he could do nothing about Rubber Chickens third goal, a long range strike deflected off a Zion foot and into the net. The 5-3 scoreline reflected Zion's game. Superior but not fluent or comfortable.

Tommy Powell spoke with BBC Sport after the game and was less than impressed with his sides performance, "We made hard work of a game we should have won comfortably. We had some good moments and created some chances but we didn't play in the fashion that our fans are used to and that isn't good enough. It's good to get the three points but if we want to compete for the title this season we have to improve our performances." Man of the match Brett Joyce believes winning ugly is a good sign, "It is impossible for a team to be on top form every game. Some games can be unbelievable, while others laboured. It's important that we win even when we aren't playing well as a team, and thats what happened today. I'm pleased with my individual performance today and want to thank BBC Sport for handing me the man of the match champagne." Zion hope that the bubbly will continue to flow after the game against rivals Bike Track Cosmos next week.
