30 minutes extra time played.

The Sheffield Academicals narrowly lost out to Sheffield FC in a hard fought Cup Final with great football on show from both teams throughout.

It took the Accies a few minutes to settle down and make their mark on the game, as Sheffield FC stroked the ball around confidently from the off. But the Accies were in amongst them immediately and it was clear that Sheffield weren't used to it and started chelping after a few stiffeners from the comitted Accies players.

Sheffield were generally making space and pinging balls into the channels as anticpated by the gaffer, so the wide players and full backs had their work cut out to stay focusssed and nullify the threat. Inevitably they conceded shots on goal though which Godders was more than equal to, pulling off a couple of fine saves in the early exchanges.

Ryan and Stan were looking confident and were attempting to play out as opposed to hoofing it long and this let the Accies creep into the contest. Early signs of their attacking intent began to emerge as Hodgy and Ben linked up with Jamie in a fast flowing move that put Swifty through to show his pace; a last ditch covering tackle denying him a shot on goal.

Over on the left Dan received the ball from Stan and jinked past 2 men before squaring it to Ben, who in turn spread it wide to Hodgy. the ball came back inside and found Daz who had dropped into space and he played a sublime blind side pass into the feet of Swifty who took a great touch, powered past his man into the box then calmly slotted it across the keeper and into the far corner to open the scoring.

This rattled Sheffield Club and they started arguing with each other and the officials which only played into the Accies hands. Dan was released on the left again by Jamie and went past his man, cutting it back for Swifty who made a solid connection but it blazed over the bar. At the other end Fozzy was having a great game containing their quality forward man and him and Batts were dealing with everything that was being thrown at them, charging down shots and dictating play from the back.

It was agonising and against the run of play when some neat football released their right back and as Dan went to cover him he scuffed his cross behind him, their player took a terrible touch and it bounced up to Godders but squirmed out of his grasp and fell to their striker who had the quality to spin and tuck it into the far corner. A hammer blow for the hard working Academicals.

Half time Sheffield FC 1 - 1 Accies

The Accies knew it would be tough in the second half but came out the better of the 2 sides. A lovely flowing move down the left had Sheffield Club panicking and asking questions of each other as Stan, Dan, Ben and Jamie linked to release Swifty into the left channel. His cut back finding Daz who struck a good shot from distance but off target.

Sheffield did take the lead again though as some good wing play produced a cross which their striker powered home with his head for his second of the evening. The Accies continued to play with confidence though. Fozzy and Batts continued to make it awkward for the forwards, Ryan and Hodgy were linking well and Ben was producing touches of class in the middle of the park with some fabulous close control. Dan megged his full back and the frustration started to show again with Club as they failed to roll the Accies over.

Jamie switched up front and Hodgy came into the centre with Ben, and the game changed immediately. The ball was stciking and Jamie was causing all sorts of problems and allowing the Accies to flow forward again. Swifty was sent clear and had his shot well saved by the keeper, Daz also struck a sweet shot that the keeper safely gathered. The Accies were pressing hard but were not creating any clear cut chances.

With only a couple of minutes left on the clock Godwin gathered a cross and threw it out to Daz who knocked it round the corner to Jamie. With 3 men round him Jamie showed his quality by beating them all and as he strode into the box he looked up and played in a peach of a cross to Dan who had run the full length of the pitch and arrived at the back post to send his diving header back across the keeper and into the far top corner.

He immediately apologised to everyone for causing extra time.

Full time Sheffield FC 2 - 2 Accies

With no subs and facing a side with 13 options on the bench it was always going to be tricky for the Accies. Despite this they continued to create chances and refused to allow Sheffield FC to dominate the play. They scored a scrappy goal as a free kick acme into the back post, their midfielders header coming off Dan's hand and rolling across the goal for a simple tap-in for their lurking player.

Resolute Accies continued to play football though and it was dogged defending that kept them in it. With 2 minutes keft on the clock Ben played a quality ball up to Jamie who took it down and shot in one movement and the keeper could only watch it bounce back off the top of the post. The crowd groaned, and an entertaining game that was a great advert for the league came to an end.
