PSv in the quarter final of the David Tacy cup today and a chance to get some redemption after our last showing against them, when in truth we didn’t play as well as we can.
A strange sight of only 12 available players was not what we wanted to see in such a big game, big players suspended, big players either away or injured our backs was against the wall before it had even started.
Still like always we had an 11 out which we felt was more than able in getting the right result and so it was nearly proven.
From the off every man ran round relentless pressing in groups it was a real joy to watch, after such a good start we needed to capitalise and get on the scoresheet.
And so it came after great play from back to front the ball found its way to Stu Hardman on the edge of the box a clever one two with Sean Phillips saw Stu released in the box and he rifled a neat finish past the keeper to send us in front 1-0.
Moments after the goal it could and maybe should have been 2-0, A Lee O’Donnell long pass saw Sean thru one on one with the keeper but his shot was well saved, then in a matter of minutes a Philly Lennon cross was met at the far post by Sean Phillips and he finished superbly only for the referee to flag for offside, it looked extremely harsh and from the side line looked the wrong call.
The game ebbed and flowed for a good few minutes until shortly before half time when Sean Phillips crossed and Dave Leslie met a bouncing ball with a shot which was scuffed and fell into the path of Stu Hardman who looked destined to score as he smashed an effort goal wards but somehow with their keeper beaten the ball was hacked off the line by a defender.
As Half time approached PSV knew they were lucky to goal in only a goal down.
Half TimeSecond half was a different game, it became scrappy and a complete battle with chances rare, but early on it was ourselves who once again had a chance to take a further lead in the game as Sean Phillips missed a chance at the back post after great work in midfield by Kevin Machin and Stu Hardman up top.
James Thomas was blowing a gasket, playing in a number 10 position in the middle of the park he had ran his plums off, he was immense, keeping things simple and pressing every second, it was no surprise that on the 60 minute mark he pulled up and on came Liam Rose in his place.
PSV with tiredness creeping in our game then had a number of chances Philly Bryan in goal once again had to pull off a superb save and seconds after that Matthew Easterbrook won a superb tackle which denied a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Then after a spell of sustained pressure and with 18 minutes left on the clock our defence was cruelly breached, a corner put in with scarily accuracy was met by a simple header and heads went down 1-1.
With the game petering out and with the ref signalling 2 minutes left everyone thought extra time was on the horizon, then sickeningly PSV Scored at the death, Lee O’Donnell who hadn’t put one foot wrong all match got turned and looked like he had slipped in the mud, their striker firing past a helpless Philly Bryan in goal 1-2.
Heads including those on the line went down, in reality they shouldn’t of, to a man we performed miracles today, passion was shown all over the pitch and we was well and truly robbed of another semi final date, and PSV knew it.
M.O.M was difficult today every man performed superbly, the back 3 the midfield everyone, James Thomas had an excellent game so too Hardman but M.O.M was given to Sean Phillips…well done! Heads can’t afford to stay down for long Telegraph in the league awaits next game and something tells me we will be more than ready for them!
