Western Vic in another quarter final today same pitch as last week and hopefully same sort of performance against a team a league above.
Another game where our squad was needed as again we was down to the bare bones.
We was straight out of the blocks Curran with a big tackle setting the early tone, we looked to get an early goal and it soon came.
Sam Yates won a towering header after a free kick was put in to a tasty area and Ryan Smith cleverly played a clearance/long pass to the left which Tom Briggs was on it in a flash taking it towards goal he fired a cross in and the onrushing Curran took a touch and fired a lovely effort inch perfect in the corner for a tremendous goal 0-1.
The game became slightly scrappy for about 10 odd minutes, and a counter attack saw Western Vics equalise with their first effort of note, a silly call for offside seen us punished as their striker accepted an easy finish 1-1.
We was playing decent enough football a few too many long balls for my liking but we was in total control and had numerous chances to score. Phillips had a good effort which just flew wide and after being intelligently played in by Davey Leslie Tom Briggs missed an easy opportunity to put us ahead again when he fired over one on one.
Moments before half time a looped Danny Curran cross was flung in and it looked like a certainty that that man Easterbrook would keep up his scoring run but somehow it got clawed off the line and cleared away.
Once again we started on the front foot and chances again went begging Briggs and Machin presented with opportunity’s which went away and after Stu Hardman was introduced in place of Briggs it was hoped a goal would finally come our way.
Before Hardman could even touch the ball we found ourselves 3-1 down in unbelievable scenes.
A player was allowed to stroll down the right and curled a great effort which evaded Philly Bryans hands sailing into the top corner 2-1…….no problem we would surely get ourselves back into the game?
2 minutes after that it got even worse another bad call for offside was punished and it was 3-1.
Cue absolute mayhem, players lost their cool, players lost their minds and some even gave up. With a good 25 minutes left to play we should be cool calm and collected but we was totally the opposite, trying to force a goal we totally abandoned our football and continually played long balls and wrong passes trying to force a goal.
Pushing for a goal we conceded with 3 minutes left on the clock making it 4-1.
We turned up today like it was just another game they turned up fired up knowing it could be their only chance of silverware this season.
Enough has been said after the game players know a reaction is needed a win next week would send us top over Christmas and our first game back is again against higher league opposition high flying PSV in the cup, a win against them would show everyone today was just a bad day at the office.
