Todays game was a very important game for our season I felt today. We went away to the same side and missing a few players, got what we deserved.......nothing. So today it was no coincidence that these players returning would make a massive difference and so it proved. The boys also had a point to prove as the away performance to Bealionians wasn't acceptable. 3 minutes in and Alfie Drake was called into action after a very good through ball found the big striker who was left 1v1 with Drake and he closed down the space very well to save with his feet. It was our turn on 4 minutes after the very good Billy Dopson forced the opponents into a mistake which allowed him to march forward with the ball and he only had the keeper to beat however the keeper made a smart save low down to his right. Dopson should of really scored!!!!. A minute later Harry Ewington played a delightful pass to Billy Dopson again who beat his player and attempted a cross which was then cut out and went for a corner. 26 minutes were on the clock when Alfie Stevenson came into the game and he played a wonderful pass through to Billy Dopson who was just about closed down by the goalkeeper. On 31 it was Stevenson again in the mix of it when he cleverly beat the left back down the right hand side and was bursting into the box. He got his shot off and was very unlucky to then hit the post and into the keepers arms. 34 gone and guess who? Stevenson on the opposite side beat the right back and place an inch perfect cross for Max Baker who from 2 yards put it wide. We will blame his right foot for that one. After half time Max Baker found himself 1v1 with the keeper and for some reason tries to pass it to Aleks Panayotov and the move broke down. 4 minutes later a poor clearance from the away goalkeeper found Sam Brown and I think he had a shot? Anyway it went wide. Maybe he saw that someone was injured? 43 minutes gone and Prince Igbo won a 50/50 tackle and galloped forward with the ball to then play an inch perfect pass for Stevenson to hit the goal but the keeper was equal to it and made a tidy save. As we started to dominate the game more so in the second half their only looked one winner in the game. Aleks Panayotov had a good opportunity saved on 53 minutes but we finally broke the deadlock again when Stevenson picked up the ball down the left and took it past 3 players, he then put the ball into the danger area, which missed Baker but then fell to Captain Riley Sykes who thankfully smashed it home with his right foot. The joy on the players faces was evident and nothing more than they had deserved. It could of got even better 4 minutes later when Max Baker closed down ball and dashed into the box but was then clipped. Penalty awarded!!!. Sam Brown stepped up and the keeper saved. 66 minutes gone and we were nearly made to pay from a dead ball situation after a ridiculous high line caught us out and luckily Drake was on hand to close the striker down who lobbed his ball over the bar. It was a very rare moment for the away side and we just seemed to switch off for a second or two. The game was then over on 68 minutes after Stevenson drove into the box yet again and fired a shot to the keepers left, he made a smart save however it feel to the poacher Baker who was on hand to squeeze it over the line. The delight in the team faces was evident and nothing more than they deserved. Everybody joined in the huddle and that shows to me how much it meant for the boys. Todays performance was a very good one for a few reasons. We put in a poor performance away to Bealionians so had to set the record straight, which we did. Todays game was a very scrappy one and it also shows we can win games when sometimes you can't play as much football as you like. The main thing for me today was the unity in the team everyone fought, battles, kicked, screamed for the result and although things didn't always go our way we played with intelligence at times. Defensively we were sound today and debutant Brandon Gardiner put in a very good display as did all of the defence but Alfie Stevenson was truly excellent today and although the boy is a right pain sometimes I'm glad he is on our side rather than the oppositions and hopefully this is the turning point for him where he realises that letting his feet doing the talking is all he needs to do. We move onto Park view next week. Well done boys
