What is Footy?

Footy is a nickname for Australian rules football, a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field. The game is known for its fast pace and high scoring, and is the most popular sport in Australia.

Footy is also played as an amateur sport in many countries around the world, including the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

History of the Adelaide Footy League

The Adelaide Footy League was founded in 1910 as the South Australian Amateur Football League (SAAFL). It was originally a competition for amateur clubs, but over time it has become more professionalized.

Footy match

The AFL currently has 67 member clubs playing over 100 matches per week. The league is divided into eight senior divisions, with reserves grades and a separate C grade competition.

The AFL's premier division is the SANFL State League, which is contested by the top 10 clubs in the league. The SANFL State League grand final is the most prestigious club competition in South Australia.

How to play Footy

Footy teams

Footy is played on an oval field that is 135 to 185 meters long and 110 to 155 meters wide. The goal posts are 6 meters apart.

The object of the game is to score more points than the other team. Points are scored by kicking the ball through the goal posts (worth six points) or between the goal posts and behind the behind post (worth one point).

Footy coaches

The game is played in four quarters of 20 minutes each. The players can move the ball by running with it, handballing it, or kicking it. They can also tackle each other to prevent them from moving the ball.
