Armthorpe Welfare Football Club

Armthorpe Welfare Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Armthorpe, South Yorkshire, England. They are currently members of the Northern Counties East League Division One and play at the Welfare Ground.

History

The club was founded in 1926 and initially competed in local leagues. In 1935 they turned semi-professional and joined the Sheffield Association League. They first entered the FA Cup in the following season, and competed in the FA Amateur Cup for a few years after World War II. They left the Sheffield League in 1950 to join Division Two of the Doncaster & District Senior League. Their first season in the new league saw them promoted to Division One.

In 1975, Armthorpe Welfare won the Northern Counties East League and were promoted to the Northern Premier League. They spent three seasons in the Northern Premier League before being relegated back to the Northern Counties East League.

In recent years, Armthorpe Welfare have been a regular challenger for promotion to the Northern Premier League. They have won the Northern Counties East League Division One on three occasions, in 2009, 2013, and 2022.

Armthorpe Welfare also run a junior summer league for children aged 5-16 years old. The league is called the Bessacarr FC junior summer league and it is held at the Welfare Ground.

The Bessacarr FC junior summer league is a great opportunity for children to get involved in football during the summer holidays. The league is well-organised and there are teams for all abilities.
