The league was founded in 1982 and currently consists of 20 teams. The teams are divided into two divisions, the Premier Division and Division One.

The champions of the Premier Division are promoted to the Northern Premier League Division One East, while the bottom two teams are relegated to Division One. The champions of Division One are promoted to the Premier Division, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the North East Counties Football League.
