The MCSFA was founded in 1974 by a group of football enthusiasts who wanted to provide more opportunities for school children to play football. The league has grown steadily since then and now has over 600 member schools.

The MCSFA has won a number of awards for its work in promoting school football. In 2019, it was awarded the FA Charter Standard Community Club Mark, which is the highest level of recognition that a community club can achieve.
