Abbey Villa travelled to Stanley Park, on Tuesday 4th of August for a league fixture against Lisburn Rangers, in a 6:45pm kick off. The match ended in a 2-1 defeat for Villa. Referee John Kirk officiated.

Villa lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. James Darlington took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, protected by a back four consisting of Philip McCulloch at right back, Matthew Edwards and Matthew Dempster as central defenders, and Louis Gault-Reed on the left flank. The midfield trio featured Josh Barnes on the right, Adam Arthur’s centrally positioned to orchestrate play, and Ryan Convery on the left, all expected to support both defence and attack. Up front, the three-pronged line included Jack Upritchard on the right wing, Scott Shannon leading the line as striker, and David Clarke on the left wing, tasked with stretching the opposition defence and creating goal-scoring opportunities. The substitutes named were Casey Courtney, Ryan Moore, and Scott Robbie.

The game burst into life within the opening five minutes when Villa’s striker Scott Shannon found the net, giving the visitors an early lead and setting the tone for an intense encounter. However, the advantage was short-lived as Lisburn Rangers responded swiftly, equalising just two minutes later to level the score at 1-1. Both sides then battled hard for control, with Villa’s midfield trio working tirelessly to link defence and attack, while the full-backs pushed forward to support wide play.

As the first half progressed, Villa’s defensive unit, marshalled by Edwards and Dempster, faced sustained pressure from the home side’s forwards but managed to keep the scoreline level until the break. The half-time whistle arrived with the teams locked at one goal apiece, setting up a tense second period.

In the second half, Villa made tactical changes to try and regain the initiative. At the 69th minute, Scott Shannon was withdrawn for Casey Courtney, while Ryan Moore replaced right back Philip McCulloch, signalling a shift in approach to inject fresh legs and energy. Shortly after, at the 75th minute, Scott Robbie came on for midfielder Josh Barnes, further altering the midfield dynamics.

Despite these adjustments, Lisburn Rangers struck again in the 76th minute, taking the lead for the first time in the match. Villa pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were unable to break down a resolute home defence. The final minutes saw Villa pressing high, but Lisburn Rangers held firm to secure a 2-1 victory.

Villa’s early promise was undone by the quick response from Lisburn Rangers and a decisive second-half goal that ultimately decided the contest. The tactical substitutions showed intent to change the game’s momentum, but the visitors fell just short in a competitive league encounter at Stanley Park.
