Abbey Villa 2nd Team welcomed Aquinas 2nds to the Adams Park on Saturday 26 September for a league match. The hosts emerged comfortable 3-0 victors in a dominant display across the 90 minutes plus injury time, with Daniel McFarland starring prominently.

Villa lined up in a classic 4-3-3 formation, deploying a balanced setup designed to control midfield and provide width in attack. James Darlington took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, protected by a back four consisting of Curtis Williamson at right back, central defenders James Edwards and Marcus McGrath, and Curtis Shannon on the left. The midfield trio featured Daniel McFarland on the right, Louis Gault-Reid centrally, and James King on the left, tasked with linking defence and attack. Up front, Thomas Drysdale operated on the right wing, Mathew Burke led the line as striker, and Kyle Irwin occupied the left forward position. The substitutes bench included Joshua Colville and Jake Livingstone, ready to impact proceedings if called upon.

The first half was a cagey affair with Villa patiently probing Aquinas’s defence but unable to break the deadlock before the interval. Both sides showed discipline and organisation, with Villa’s midfield trio working hard to stifle Aquinas’s attempts to gain momentum. The home side’s wide players, Drysdale and Irwin, looked lively but were well contained, and the half ended goalless.

Shortly after the restart, Villa’s persistence paid dividends. In the 52nd minute, Kyle Irwin delivered a precise cross from the left forward position, finding Daniel McFarland on the right midfield. McFarland made no mistake, slotting home to give the hosts the lead and ignite the home crowd. Just three minutes later, Villa doubled their advantage. McFarland turned provider this time, setting up Thomas Drysdale on the right forward flank who finished clinically to make it 2-0.

The pressure continued to mount on Aquinas, and in the 63rd minute, McFarland once again found the net, this time assisted by Drysdale. The combination between the right midfielder and right forward proved too much for the visitors’ defence, sealing a commanding 3-0 lead for Villa.

Shortly after the third goal, Villa made their first substitution due to injury, with Joshua Colville replacing central midfielder Louis Gault-Reid in the 64th minute. Meanwhile, Aquinas received a yellow card in the 55th minute, followed by another caution ten minutes later, reflecting their increasing frustration as Villa dominated possession and territory.

In the 80th minute, Villa made a tactical change, bringing on Jake Livingstone for left defender Curtis Shannon to freshen up the backline and maintain defensive solidity for the closing stages.

Villa’s victory was underpinned by the outstanding performance of Daniel McFarland, whose two goals and one assist earned him the well-deserved player of the match accolade. The home side’s cohesive 4-3-3 formation allowed them to control the midfield and exploit wide areas effectively, while their defensive unit kept a clean sheet against a determined Aquinas 2nds.

Referee Moore Holmes oversaw the match with authority, managing the game flow and disciplinary matters efficiently. Villa’s clinical finishing and tactical discipline ensured a comfortable three-goal margin and valuable league points at home.
