The match got off to a challenging start for Villa as Aquinas took the lead inside the opening ten minutes. The visitors struggled to contain their opponents’ early pressure, conceding a goal that set the tone for a fiercely competitive encounter.
Just eight minutes later, Villa were forced into an early substitution when Jake Wilson went off injured, replaced by Carson Mann. This change introduced fresh legs on the right wing.
Aquinas received a yellow card on the half-hour mark, reflecting the physical nature of the contest. Shortly after, Abbey Villa’s goalkeeper Ross Murray was then cautioned in the 37th minute, after a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty being awarded.
Aquinas then converted to double their lead just before half time. Villa went into the break trailing 2-0, facing a significant uphill battle in the second half.
The second half saw Villa attempt to claw their way back into the game. Josh Barnes had an early effort wide of the target in the 51st minute, signalling the team’s intent to reduce the deficit. Matthew Dempster then had a goal disallowed in the 62nd minute, for a supposed foul on the keeper? But this was a sign of Villa’s growing threat from set pieces and defensive forays.
Villa made a tactical substitution in the 66th minute, bringing on Joshua Colville for James King in a reshuffle at the back and put in place a different dynamic in midfield.
The breakthrough then came in the 74th minute when substitute Carson Mann headed home from a corner delivered by Curtis Shannon. This goal sparked renewed hope and lifted Villa’s spirits as they sought an equaliser.
Another injury setback arrived in the 80th minute when Marcus McGrath was forced off, replaced by Thomas Drysdale. The fresh substitute immediately made an impact, testing the goalkeeper with a saved attempt five minutes later.
Villa’s persistence eventually paid off deep into added time at 94 minutes when Alan Strain rose highest to head in after Kyle Irwin cut in from the right and put in a lovely cross, securing a dramatic late equaliser. This goal ensured Villa salvaged a valuable point from a match that had looked lost at half time.
Curtis Shannon was a standout performer throughout, providing an assist from a corner and demonstrating defensive solidity and attacking support from right back. His influence was pivotal in Abbey Villa’s comeback.
In the end, Villa 2nds showed great character to recover from a two-goal deficit and earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw away at Aquinas 2nds, leaving both teams to reflect on a fiercely contested league encounter.
