The match burst into life early on when James King, Villa’s dynamic young midfielder, produced a fine solo effort to open the scoring in the 14th minute. King’s individual skill and drive saw him carve through the Aquinas defence before slotting home, giving the home side an encouraging lead.

However, the advantage was short-lived as Aquinas capitalised on a defensive mistake in the 26th minute to level the scores. The error unsettled Villa’s backline and allowed the visitors to find the net, signalling a shift in momentum.

Tensions rose as the first half progressed, culminating in a crucial moment just before the break. In the 39th minute, Joshua Colville was penalised for a trip inside the penalty area, conceding a spot-kick to Aquinas. The visitors made no mistake from the penalty spot a minute later, turning the game on its head with a 2-1 lead going into half-time.

The second half began with Villa searching for an equaliser, but their hopes were dealt a severe blow in the 52nd minute when Thomas Drysdale received a red card for a bad tackle. Reduced to ten men, Villa faced an uphill battle to regain control.

Managerial tactical changes followed with Cameron Watts replacing Paul Mulholland in the 67th minute, with a change in formation. Yet, just a minute later, Aquinas extended their lead to 3-1, again benefiting from another defensive lapse that allowed them to score.

Villa continued to make substitutions in an attempt to alter the game’s course. Jim Robinson came on for Mark Gilliland in the 69th minute, followed by Reece Trimble replacing James Boyd in the 78th minute, both tactical moves to inject fresh energy and creativity.

Their efforts bore fruit almost immediately as Kyle Irwin delivered a precise cross into the box in the 79th minute, which Carson Mann expertly converted. This goal narrowed the deficit to 3-2 and reignited hope for the home side.

Despite their numerical disadvantage and spirited late efforts, Villa could not find the equaliser, and Aquinas held firm to secure the victory.

James King’s influential performance, highlighted by his opening goal and tireless workrate, earned him the man of the match accolade. The contest was a thrilling encounter marked by moments of individual brilliance, defensive errors, and tactical battles, ultimately swinging in Aquinas 2nds’ favour.
