Abbey Villa 2nds hosted Derriaghy 2nds at Adams Park, yesterday in a league fixture that ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The match saw Villa 2nds unable to break down a resolute Derriaghy defence despite several promising attempts.
From the outset, Villa sought to impose their attacking shape, with Daniel McFarland testing the opposition keeper early on in the 14th minute, though his effort went wide. The hosts continued to press, and Kyle Irwin forced a save from the Derriaghy goalkeeper in the 23rd minute, signalling their intent to find a breakthrough. James Edwards then had a chance to add to the pressure with a header in the 31st minute, but his effort sailed high over the bar.
Derriaghy showed their resilience and discipline. Despite the pressure, the first half concluded goalless, with both sides locked in a tactical battle.
Early in the second half, Villa made a tactical substitution in the 55th minute, bringing on Carson Mann to replace Thomas Drysdale in an attempt to refresh their attacking options. Daniel McFarland continued to be a threat, but his shot in the 62nd minute was expertly saved by the opposition keeper. Shortly after, in the 64th minute, Mathew Burke was introduced for McFarland, signalling a shift in attacking personnel as Villa searched for a decisive goal.
James King had a chance to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute, but his effort went high over the bar. Moments later, Matthew Edwards came agonisingly close when his shot struck the crossbar in the 73rd minute, the closest Villa came to scoring. He continued to press and saw another attempt saved in the 78th minute, with a great effort from the corner. This brought an exceptional save right in the top corner from the Derriaghy keeper.
Derriaghy had their moment to take all 3 points, when they broke down Villa's left side and unleashed a shot that just went wide of the post, but had Villa keeper Ross Murray scrambling.
As the match wore on, Mathew Burke had a final opportunity in the 84th minute, but his header also flew high over the bar.
Despite numerous attempts and tactical changes, Villa were unable to convert their chances, and the match ended in a goalless draw. Both teams shared the spoils in a tightly contested league fixture, with Villa left to rue missed opportunities at Adams Park.
Man of the match definitely going to Derriaghy's man between the sticks on the day. ??
All the best to Derriaghy for the remainder of the season.??
