Abbey Villa 2nds travelled to Dennis Harvey Park yesterday to face Larne Tech 2nds, in what proved to be a pretty heated contest throughout.

The match began with Villa pressing high and testing the Larne Tech defence early on. Daniel McFarland’s first notable attempt came in the 14th minute when his effort looked to have clearly crossed the line by a few feet, but not seen by the referee. This signalled the visitors’ intent though. Larne Tech responded with physicality, earning a yellow card in the 18th minute for a foul, which set the tone for a fiercely competitive encounter.

Villa then took the lead in the 22nd minute when Thomas Drysdale unleashed a spectacular screamer from outside the box, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. However, the lead was short-lived as Larne Tech capitalised on a defensive mistake just a minute later to level the scores at 1-1, ensuring the game remained finely poised.

The match saw an early injury setback for Villa when skioper Jake Rainey was forced off in the 40th minute, replaced by Joshua Colville to shore up the backline. Larne Tech’s aggression continued to be a factor, with two further yellow cards shown to their players just before half-time at the 42nd and 45th minutes respectively.

At the interval, the score remained 1:1, with both sides having had their moments but Villa’s quality in attack promising more to come in the second half.

The second half resumed with intensity as Kyle Irwin received a yellow card in the 50th minute for a challenge, followed by two more cautions for Larne Tech players in quick succession at 52 and 56 minutes. Villa’s discipline was tested but they maintained their composure.

The breakthrough came in the 66th minute when Matthew Edwards rose highest to head home a corner expertly delivered by Kyle Irwin, restoring Villa’s lead. This goal was a crucial moment, demonstrating the visitors’ threat from set-pieces.

Tactical changes followed with Carson Mann introduced for Thomas Drysdale in the 70th minute, signalling a shift in approach. Shortly after, Paul Mulholland replaced the injured Kyle Irwin in the 75th minute, ensuring fresh legs on the flanks.

Villa extended their advantage in the 81st minute through Curtis Shannon, who struck a thunderous long-range effort into the net, effectively sealing the contest. Larne Tech continued to battle but a final yellow card in the 90th minute underscored their frustration.

James Edwards was a standout performer throughout, his defensive solidity, aggressive play and forward runs from right back earning him the man of the match accolade. Ross Murray’s goalkeeping was steady, while the midfield trio provided the necessary balance to control the game.

Villa’s 3:1 victory at Dennis Harvey Park was a testament to their tactical discipline, attacking prowess, and resilience in the face of physical opposition. This result will boost their confidence as the league campain continues. Next up is Derriaghy CC 2nds at Adams Park, on Saturday 25th April.
