HUTSON CUP PERLIMINERY ROUND

Boythorpe...3 White Swan Reserves...0

Boythorpe moved into the last 16 of the Hutson Cup at the expense of next to bottom of the league White Swan Res, but it wasnt a classic performance by any means at Somersall Park last sunday.

Kicking uphill on a cold morning, on a pitch that had recovered well from the previous weeks mud bath Boythorpe pushed forward at the start. After 3 minutes Wright was unlucky to be caught offside after being put clear. On 5 minutes the Blues took the lead from what some people would say "a fluke of a goal" i would prefer to say "it was a case of the player showing superb vision". BONSON picked up the ball in his own half before trading passes with Shane Bennett and continuing his run to the touchline and cutting back beating a defender and sending a shot cum cross drifting over the keeper towards the back post. The keeper flapped at the ball but was unable to keep it from crossing the line for 1-0.

Wright went close after 13 mins, but his fierce low shot was well held by the keeper. Higginbottom had a fine run and shot soon after, then good work by Scott Bennett saw the keeper tip the ball onto the bar, the ball dropped to Wright with the goal at his mercy his powerfull shot came back off the upright. Within 2 mins Wright was again foiled by the keeper when he smothered the ball well at the strikers feet.

On the half hour Scott Bennett was set free with a through ball, but it took an outrageous bobble as the striker squared to shoot, and the ball sailed over the net. The visitors were still dangerous going forward but never looked likely to score as time after time the final shot let them down, but Boythorpe still made heavy weather of clearing and keeping possesion of the ball, but right on half time could have increased the lead, Widerman found Lee Walton with a through ball, but he put the chance over. HALF TIME Boythorpe...1 White Swan Res...0

Boythorpe were so close to being caught out within a minute of the re-start, a smart 30 yard free kick went inches wide of Furniss's goal, with the defence looking at each other. On 51 mins Wright scuffed his shot wide after being played through by Lee Walton. A White Swan corner caused absolute panic in the Blues box as they tried to hack the ball clear a number of times before eventually clearing thier lines. Widerman went close on 55, but again the ball sailed over. Both teams struggled at times and good football was at a premium, but Boythorpe were just slightly better than thier visitors.

The Referee shown Yellow cards to White Swan number 4 and Boythorpes Lee Walton on 66 mins. And Lee Wright was replaced by Steve Miles on 68 mins after the out of sorts striker had complained of feeling ill. The game became very disjointed from this point, and Swan had a great chance when Hardy out by the corner flag, turned and sent the ball high into his own six yard box, but the hosts got away with it.

It was left to the impressive BONSON to put the Blues further into the lead, MOTM Martyn Higginbttom put the ball into the visitors box, and although a defender had the ball, he dallied too long and Bonson made a strong tackle to rob him of the ball before beating the keeper from close range. This killed any fight from the visitors and Boythorpe rounded off the game with 5 mns left. Walton found WIDERMAN and the red hot, in form striker did the rest. Boythorpe on another day against stronger opposition would have been picked off, but they got the right result and now take thier place in the last 16 in a competition that is ONLY open to the bottom TWO divisions.
