Today’s Match Report is brought to you by Spence, Staszkiewicz and the letters ‘L’, ‘M’ and ‘B’ (edited by Patto):

“Boots were rubbish first half, with Beeston’s first goal coming when a wide shot wasn’t closed down and their right winger flung himself at the ball and headed it into far corner. Their second was an error by Spence, when he took too long trying to pass the ball out of defence, but was caught and their guy was clean through on goal for a simple finish.

The second half was much better as Beeston tired and started to try and kick the Boots players rather than the ball. Athletic should have had at least 2 sent off for ‘after the ball’ kicks and a deliberate handball in the first half. Joke ref.

Wednesday got a goal back when Ian turned onto a through ball over the top from Brett and kept calm to slot it home. Boots then missed a couple of chances before a Brett free kick (which he shanked) bobbled through to the back post where Bally knocked it in for his first of the season. Athletic hit the post in the second half when it was 2-1 but they really tired and got annoyed with the Ref as well, while at the other end Boots could have won it with about 5 minutes to go when Luke tried to shoot from a tight angle when there were 3 people waiting unmarked in the 6 yard box for a simple tap in.

Not a pretty game, but a point after the first half was a good show of spirit and Boots could have gone on and won it with a bit of luck and a decent referee.”

Additional: Pete made his first contribution to our season by getting sent off for an attempted head-butt on their linesman and lots of verbal abuse towards the referee and the opposing support – it sounds like the ref lost control of the game and there were some fairly horrific challenges (particularly one on Brett) that could have been a straight red on another day. Rowan got Man of the Match, so well done to him!
