A good, battling performance couldn’t save Canterbury Mariners 60s from an opening day 2-0 defeat at The Langton yesterday.
Woodnesborough Bees brought a much stronger squad than they had fielded in the last two seasons and proved to be tough opponents. We were not outclassed, however, and matched them in most aspects of the game, showing that we, too, have improved.
Indeed, only a fine display by Woodies keeper prevented a more realistic scoreline, with at least a draw being a fairer reflection of the game.
Woodies scored with a deflected shot in the first half, whilst, in the second, a great ball sent their striker clean through one-on-one with Jan, who was beaten by a well-placed shot.
Rob, Shaun, Andy and Mike all had good efforts saved by their keeper.
Our new 60s Manager, Jon Payne, expressed himself happy with the performance, considering the squad had not properly trained together since the end of last season. He will be ensuring that this changes!
In general, our passing and interplay were good, but with occasional lapses through rushing things or lack of concentration. As always with us, communication needs to be far better.
Player of the Match was Mike who put in another fine display of dogged defending, and whose communication is an example to the quieter member of the squad!
