Enfield Celtic travelled to Ballybay Nafarty, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, on 1 March 2026 for an 11-a-side tournament match against Carrig Rovers, kicking off at 11:15am. The match ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat for Enfield Celtic after a closely contested 90 minutes plus injury time.
Enfield Celtic lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, aiming to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. Sean Coyle took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, with a back four comprising Jack Maher at right back, Philly Keating and Sean O’Shea as central defenders, and Conor Geraghty on the left flank. The midfield trio featured Dylan Mcdonagh on the right, Nathan Kearney centrally, and Evan Geraghty on the left, expected to link defence and attack while providing width and creativity. Up front, the attacking trio consisted of Ethan Mcloughlin on the right wing, Stephen Maher leading the line as striker, and Jack Campion on the left wing, all tasked with breaking down the opposition defence and scoring goals. The substitutes named were Nicky Foster, Darragh Curtis, and Eoin Mullan.
The match burst into life early on when Enfield Celtic took the lead in the 13th minute. Stephen Maher played a short, incisive pass inside the box to Ethan Mcloughlin, who coolly finished with his right foot to give the visitors an early advantage. However, the joy was short-lived as Carrig Rovers responded swiftly, levelling the score just four minutes later in the 17th minute, demonstrating their resilience and intent to fight back.
As the first half progressed, tensions rose and the game became increasingly physical. Sean O’Shea was shown a yellow card in the 39th minute for persistent infringements, a warning that reflected the competitive edge of the encounter. Despite this, both sides pushed hard for a breakthrough before the half-time whistle blew at 45 minutes, with the score locked at 1-1.
The second half saw Carrig Rovers seize the initiative early on, scoring the decisive goal in the 50th minute to take the lead. Enfield Celtic’s challenge intensified but was hampered by further disciplinary issues. Jack Maher received a yellow card in the 51st minute, also for persistent infringements, which added to the mounting pressure on the visitors.
In an attempt to alter the course of the game, Enfield Celtic made a series of tactical substitutions in the final quarter. At 76 minutes, Nicky Foster replaced Jack Maher, aiming to shore up the right side of defence. Shortly after, Darragh Curtis came on for Stephen Maher in the 82nd minute, followed by Eoin Mullan replacing Philly Keating at centre back in the 83rd minute, signalling a shift in strategy as the team sought to regain control and push for an equaliser.
Despite their efforts, Enfield Celtic were unable to find the net again, and Carrig Rovers held on to secure a 2-1 victory. The match was a hard-fought contest with moments of quality and determination from both sides, but ultimately it was the home team who emerged victorious on the day.
