Glebe U9 Jaguars travelled to Shortlands to face AFC Shortlands, knowing they were up against a strong side following their last meeting back in November. In what proved to be the warmest game of the year so far, the boys were in for a tough test - but they brought the fight from start to finish.
Kicking off at 10:00am in this 7-a-side encounter, Glebe set up in their usual 2-3-1 formation, looking to stay organised and compete across the pitch. From the outset, AFC Shortlands showed their quality, moving the ball well and applying pressure, but Glebe responded with determination and effort, battling hard in the heat.
The first half saw Shortlands take control being able to capitalise on a few opportunities to build a lead. Despite this, Glebe kept working, showing resilience and refusing to let their heads drop against a very competitive side.
After the break, the boys came out with real intent. They dug in, matched the physical battle, and started to create chances of their own. Glebe were rewarded with two goals, showing great determination to get back into the game and put the opposition under pressure.
It was a game that demanded a lot physically, especially in the conditions, but the boys continued to battle for every ball and support each other throughout.
Jax Surucu was named Player of the Match for an excellent performance in goal, making some really good catches and showing great composure with his ball distribution to help get the team moving.
While the result ended 5–2 in favour of AFC Shortlands, this was a spirited performance from Glebe. Against a strong opponent, the boys showed resilience, work ethic, and a willingness to compete, proving again how much they have grown as a team.
Hopefully the boys can enjoy a well-earned rest over the bank holiday before turning their focus to next week’s cup final.
