A glorious 3–0 home win at what we now officially call Fortress Devonshire Road. And by fortress, I don’t mean intimidating football — I mean the pitch is so rough that visiting teams arrive, take one look, and immediately regret their life choices. We’re talking craters, midge swarms, and some sort of mysterious touchline poo that no scientist has yet been able to classify. Premier League? No. Jurassic Park? Absolutely.

James Brigden once again proved he is the white John Barnes, gliding around defenders like he’s on a dance floor nobody else was invited to. Two classy goals and a sublime assist — the lad’s basically doing a one-man tribute act at this point.

Rex decided to take the first 65 minutes off, presumably to study the pitch wildlife, but once he finally woke up he turned into the player we all know he can be… when he feels like it. A late arrival, but a welcome one.

At the back, we were solid again — unless someone launched a ball from space, in which case we briefly panicked like a family of meerkats. Being solid at the back with Letty and Dex gave Junior the chance to push up and start bossing the midfield like he owned shares in it.

Tom L, with very little to do all game, still managed to provide two excellent reasons why he’s Gravesberie’s number 1. His face did more work than his hands — heroic, brave, and probably still stinging.

Now, about the knees. I don’t know what’s going on, but apparently the knee is now the preferred tool for dealing with anything. High ball? Knee. Low ball? Knee. Random deflection? Knee. Opponent within five yards? Knee. We might need a full knee-only training session just to embrace the madness.

Despite the knee-fest, some of the football was genuinely brilliant — at times we looked like Barcelona in disguise, if Barcelona had been forced to play on a pitch that doubles as a wildlife reserve.

A tough test awaits away at Heswall this weekend. Let’s hope their perfect fake pitch doesn’t fight back.
