Visiting the top of the league was always going to be difficult — like trying to fight a bear armed only with a water pistol, and with half the squad already injured before kick-off, it became even more difficult. At one point I considered asking the ref if emotional damage counted as a substitution.
From the first whistle we were under the cosh. Not just under it — living under it. Renting space under it. Tom La was making saves his body absolutely did not deserve to make. The lad was braver than most grown men, throwing himself at shots like he was trying to stop a burglary.
But football is a funny old game.
On 15 minutes, the opposition decided to gift us a long-range back pass that had the accuracy of a drunk carrier pigeon. Alfie latched onto it, the ball bounced around like it was auditioning for Cirque du Soleil, and somehow he calmly slotted it in from about 30 yards. We went 1–0 up, and nobody — including Alfie — could explain how.
We finished the half leading, mainly through luck, prayer, and Tom La’s face.
The second half started exactly how the first ended: us riding our luck like a free rollercoaster at Alton Towers. Chance after chance for them, while our back line had apparently gone on a short weekend break to Guernsey. Sun, sea, and absolutely no defending.
But then… magic.
On 45 minutes, the only person Chuck Norris is scared of — Junior — broke from CDM with footwork so delicious it should’ve been served in a Michelin-star restaurant. He slipped in Rex, who smashed it home for 2–0 with a strike that made the hairs on my neck stand up and salute.
And that, sadly, was the end of the joy.
What followed was basically a re-enactment of The Alamo. They scored four in twelve minutes:
one scrappy,
one classy,
one scored single-handedly,
and one own goal from a corner that defied physics, logic, and basic human dignity.
We lost focus. The back line was decimated. Dexter became a one-man defence, covering more ground than Merseyrail and still somehow shouting instructions while sprinting. The rest of the team resembled the walking dead — limping, hobbling, staggering, and still trying their hearts out.
Injured players replaced injured players. Ice packs were broken out for the first time this season. Brave lads everywhere, all desperate to keep going for the team.
And honestly — what more can you ask for?
Results? Who gives a toss. Team spirit? That’s the real win. Knowing how to lose as well as win? That’s football. Proud as shite.
