Today we welcomed Sutton United for our final game of the season, looking to avenge a 5-0 defeat in the reverse fixture.
Unfortunately we were missing Ferrara due to illness, Omar to injury, with Charlie & Rushy on holiday, so the boys were up against it again today.
The Reds started brightly but would soon find themselves under a barrage of pressure with Sutton forcing a corner. The corner was mis-hit, but fell favourably to the Sutton midfielder who’s shot deflected off a Hampton player and could not be kept out, 0-1.
From this point Hampton really stepped up, with Kielan moving into the midfield and proving to be the calm influence that was needed.
Actually the first involvement of Kielans was a 35 yard strike that I thought was in but just went wide.
Hampton pushed up the pitch and put Sutton on the back foot, with Rayyan and Fin combining and eventually clipping the outside of the post.
Fin again breaking through on the right but his shot was over the bar. Ollie then with a quick hit that the keeper made a mess of which gave us a corner, but we couldn’t take advantage.
The last action of the half was a superb save from Harrison, stretching to keep out what looked like a certain goal.
HT 0-1.
The second half started much like the first, with Hampton trying to push down the wings and battling hard at the back, with Fyn and Sal using their pace to thwart any long-ball tactics. Sanders and Oscar also making some very notable tackles.
Rayyan decided he was going to have a go at the defence and drove into the box, crossing only for Callan to hit wide, so unlucky.
Killer blow came when Sutton broke free and were awarded a penalty that was converted confidently, 0-2.
Hampton weren’t in the mood to give up though and again pressed up the pitch, Rayyan proving to be a real thorn in their side and was brought down in the box, penalty.
It always confuses me when nobody grabs the ball and wants to take pens! Fyn did though, he fancied it, but unfortunately the keeper guessed the right way and it was saved. It wasn’t going to be our day.
FT 0-2.
A brave effort from the lads, with Harrison pulling off a string of good saves, Fin, Harry, Rayyan working tirelessly as well as everyone else, but we just didn’t have enough today unfortunately.
MOTM thoroughly deserved for Kielan, who will be moving into midfield next season after that showing.
A tough season for the boys, one we can all learn from.
Onto the next one!
