Maidstone United KYL U14 welcomed Sutton Athletic U14 to Cornwallis Academy on 26 April 2026 for a 12:00pm kick-off in a league home match. Over the course of 70 minutes plus added time, Maidstone United delivered a commanding performance, securing a 6-1 victory against their visitors.

Maidstone lined up in a 4-2-1-3 formation, deploying a solid defensive line with Zane Clements at right back, Liam Rich and Danny Lowe as central defenders, and Max Carney on the left. The midfield double pivot featured Tosan Okomi and Captain Eddie Ambrose, tasked with both defensive duties and linking play. Ahead of them, Harrison Smith operated as the attacking midfielder, orchestrating attacks behind a front three of Rylee Rodgers on the right, Zaph Kouassi leading as striker, and Sawyer Booth on the left. The substitutes available were Blake Vince, Bernie Farley, Tommy Monaghan, Bertie Hayward, and Tank Evans. Ollie Higginson was on hand to support his team mates as he is currently on trial at Cambridge United.

From the outset, Maidstone’s defensive resilience was evident. Within the first minute, Zane Clements was alert to clear a header and follow up with a clearance, setting the tone for a disciplined backline. Simultaneously, Zaph Kouassi demonstrated his vision early on with a long pass that created a chance, although Sawyer Booth’s initial attempt went high. The defensive unit remained vigilant, with Max Carney intercepting and Danny Lowe making crucial interceptions and headers in quick succession.

Maidstone’s midfield and attack combined effectively, with Kouassi again providing a slide rule pass in the third minute that carved open opportunities. Harrison Smith’s wide shot narrowly missed, but the team’s pressure was relentless. Liam Rich contributed defensively with a timely block and clearance, while Sawyer Booth’s tackling and Max Carney’s defensive headers ensured Sutton Athletic struggled to gain foothold.

The breakthrough came in the seventh minute when Harrison Smith’s precise short pass found Max Carney inside the box, who calmly finished with his left foot to open the scoring. Maidstone’s defence continued to repel Sutton’s advances, with Danny Lowe and Eddie Ambrose winning headers and clearances, and Liam Rich intercepting repeatedly to maintain control.

Maidstone’s attacking intent remained high. Max Carney nearly doubled the lead with a long-range effort that rattled the crossbar in the 15th minute. The team’s fluid passing, including key contributions from Harrison Smith and goalkeeper Harvey Rostron’s long distributions, kept Sutton on the back foot. Rostron’s command of his area was notable, catching crosses and launching attacks with accurate long passes.

Substitutions began at the 26th minute mark, with Blake Vince replacing Rylee Rodgers and Bernie Farley also entered the fray for Sawyer Booth at 29 minutes. These changes injected fresh energy into Maidstone’s play, with Vince and Farley immediately involved in creating chances through slide rule passes and incisive long balls.

Max Carney’s influence was pivotal once more as he scored a stunning direct free-kick from long range with his left foot in the 29th minute, extending Maidstone’s lead. The team’s attacking rhythm was relentless, with Rostron and Clements continuing to supply quality passes, and Kouassi’s flicks and tackles adding to the forward momentum.

The second half began with further tactical adjustments. Tommy Monaghan replaced Max Carney, and Danny Lowe’s long pass set up Zaph Kouassi, who scored from close range following a flick assist in the 36th minute. Shortly after, Kouassi was substituted for Rylee Rodgers, while Tank Evans and Bertie Hayward came on for Clements and Rich respectively, reinforcing the defensive and midfield lines.

Despite a rare mis-timed by Danny Lowe in the 52nd minute, which led to Sutton Athletic being awarded a penalty, Maidstone’s dominance was undiminished. Kouassi restored the two-goal cushion with a composed penalty conversion in the 57th minute, although Lowe received a yellow card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity during the incident.

Maidstone’s defensive solidity was maintained by Bertie Hayward and others, with interceptions and tackles preventing Sutton from mounting sustained pressure. Eddie Ambrose and Danny Lowe continued to contest aerial duels and clearances effectively, while Tank Evans contributed with crucial tackles and interceptions.

Bernie Farley’s influence grew as he orchestrated play with slide rule passes and came close to scoring himself, hitting the crossbar in the 44th minute. Rostron’s goalkeeping was exceptional, making a full-stretch save in the 63rd minute to keep the clean sheet intact.

The attacking trio of Rodgers, Booth, and Smith combined well in the latter stages. Rodgers’ slide rule pass set up Sawyer Booth for a neat finish inside the box in the 64th minute. Booth was then replaced by Harrison Smith, who continued to create chances with precise passes.

Liam Rich and Tommy Monaghan provided defensive cover with timely clearances and blocks, while Harrison Smith’s slide rule pass in the 72nd minute found Rylee Rodgers, whose cross was expertly finished by Smith himself to make it 6-1.

Kouassi remained a constant threat, providing flick passes and attempting shots, including one saved in the 73rd minute. The match concluded with Maidstone United KYL U14 thoroughly in control, their 4-2-1-3 formation executed to near perfection, blending defensive discipline with attacking flair.

Zaph Kouassi was deservedly named player of the match for his all-round contribution, scoring twice, assisting, and showing defensive commitment throughout. Maidstone’s comprehensive victory at Cornwallis Academy was a testament to their teamwork, tactical awareness, and clinical finishing.
