MEFF #56: MOUNT AN OLYMPIAN 1 – 5 THE WARSAW PACK

Sicky’s Squad Scores (sponsored by Experian):Griff’s Team = 8.16, Luke’s Team = 8.29. Luke should win by 3 goals.

With several players hobbling around after a weekend of 11-a-side and the sun beating down, FAECES Game 7 produced some of the shabbiest football ever witnessed on the hallowed Charnwood turf. Luke’s Warsaw Pack took on Griffin’s Mount an Olympian, and for a while the game of football was all Greek to the assembled players, who shanked, screamed and poked their way to stalemate for the opening 10 minutes. The Pack somehow only scored one goal in the first half (and a scrappy one at that) despite complete disarray in their opponent’s penalty box as Pete palmed away several goal-bound shots, although Patto and Ash both had efforts blocked by Rowan and his solid defence at the other end.

With the sun advantage and Crozier replacing Brett, The Pack made their movement count in the second half and ran away with the game as Fletch produced yet another talismanic performance to claim his hat-trick. Despite the scoreline, the Olympians were actually quite unfortunate in front of goal, with Ash smashing the post with a screamer, and Phil G producing a sensational volleyed effort (“Van Persie-esque” Bradley, 2012) from Pete’s long ball, but Rowan saved it well. Patto hobbled off after an Achilles stud-scrape, and was replaced by Toobs who battled well in defence and saw a cracking volley thump the post and roll along the goal-line, while Phil G couldn’t bundle home an Ash rebound from 1 yard after good work from Kieran and Daz. Extra goals from Neil and Crozier confirmed the result as the Olympians pushed too high for a comeback, with Spence and Luke winning their battles to release the goalscorers.

0-1: Fletch(Brett’s throw from the right wing took a number of deflections off Patto, Pete and Daz before Fletch reacted quickest to stab into the net, with the ball looping off Daz over Pete’s arm)

Half Time

0-2: Fletch(Crozier’s quick corner caught the Olympians napping, and Ash’s headed clearance fell to Luke who squared the ball for Fletch to volley home)

1-2: Griffin(Following a quick corner, Daz took down an attempted clearance and fed Griff on the right, who tried an audacious shot from a tight angle, with the ball ricocheting in off Rowan’s shins)

1-3: Fletch(A counter-attack from the Pack was too rapid for the Olympians, and Crozier crossed the ball from the right wing for Fletch to bundle home at the back post – HAT TRICK)

1-4: Neil(Spence was quickest to a high ball in the centre, nicking in front of Pete and laying off to Neil, who rolled the ball into the empty net)

1-5: Crozier(Luke fed Crozier on the counter-attack, who smashed the ball home despite Brett’s sliding tackle)

Men of the Match were Phil G, “for THAT volley”, and Fletch, for “another solid performance”.
