On the morning of 3 May 2026, The Fountain FC welcomed Burnopfield Sun Inn First to the Delves Lane Community Association Pitch for a lively cup tie kicking off at 10:30am, overseen by referee David Tomlinson, whose firm but fair control ensured a flowing game in front of 40 spectators.

The Fountain FC lined up in a 4-1-2-3 formation, designed to balance defensive solidity with attacking flair. Andy Gowland took his place between the sticks as goalkeeper, protected by a back four comprising Brandon Fitzgerald at right back, Dan Cave and Lewis Sullivan as central defenders, and Nathan Sterling on the left flank. Ian Johnstone operated as the lone holding midfielder, tasked with shielding the defence and recycling possession. Ahead of him, Joe Currie occupied the right attacking midfield role, while Lewis Currie took up the left attacking midfield berth, both expected to supply creativity and link play. The front three featured Rowan Latimer on the right wing, Favour Ekomemen leading the line as striker, and Dylan Saleh on the left wing, all charged with stretching the opposition and converting chances. On the bench, Similoluwa Afilaka, Scott Thompson and Ben Walton awaited their opportunity to influence the match.

The game burst into life early on when Burnopfield Sun Inn First received a yellow card in the fourth minute for a deliberate handball, after a couple free kicks on the edge of the box, setting the tone for a fiercely contested encounter. This indiscretion handed The Fountain FC a penalty just a minute later, which Favour Ekomemen confidently dispatched with his right foot, striking it straight down the pipe and putting the hosts ahead inside five minutes.

Barely had the celebrations died down when Burnopfield Sun Inn First struck back. A close-range own goal, inadvertently deflected into the Fountains net, leaving the score at 1-1 in the seventh minute.

The Fountain FC pushed on and managed to maintain possession and territory, and their second goal arrived in the 15th minute. Ekomemen again played a pivotal role, this time delivering a precise short pass inside the box to Rowan Latimer, who finished clinically to extend the lead. The home side’s attacking intent was clear, with Ekomemen orchestrating much of the play.

As the half progressed, Joe Currie showcased his technical ability with a stunning lob from outside the box in the 30th minute, catching the goalkeeper off guard and sending the ball arcing beautifully into the net. This spectacular strike put The Fountain FC firmly in control at 3-1 going into the break. Moments before halftime, the Fountain keeper was clattered by a poor challenge, a studded tackle straight to the knee that left Gowland reeling. Despite the heavy blow, Gowland was able to carry on.

Burnopfield Sun Inn First regrouped during the interval and managed to pull one back through a well-worked team move in the 55th minute, their forward finishing neatly with his right foot. This goal injected some hope for the visitors, who looked to claw their way back into the contest.

In response, The Fountain FC made a tactical substitution on the hour mark, replacing left forward Dylan Saleh with Similoluwa Afilaka to freshen their attacking options and maintain pressure on the opposition’s defence.

The home side’s response was emphatic. In the 70th minute, Lewis Currie unleashed a thunderous right-footed strike following a corner delivered by Rowan Latimer, the ball crashing into the net in spectacular fashion like a Zinadine Zidane worldie against Leverkusen. This screamer electrified the crowd and reasserted The Fountain’s dominance.

With the game well in hand, another tactical change came in the 80th minute as Scott Thompson replaced Rowan Latimer, allowing fresh legs to maintain the tempo and defensive stability.

Five minutes later, Thompson made an immediate impact by scoring a close-range tap-in, capitalising on a precise cross from Ekomemen. This goal sealed the emphatic 5-2 victory for The Fountain FC.

Throughout the match, Favour Ekomemen was instrumental, contributing two assists and a penalty goal, while Lewis Currie’s outstanding performance, highlighted by his spectacular goal, earned him the man of the match accolade. The Fountain FC’s fluid attacking play and disciplined defensive organisation proved too much for Burnopfield Sun Inn First, who fought valiantly but ultimately succumbed on the day.
