The Fountain FC travelled to South Leigh, Tanfield Lea, Stanley, on 16 August 2026 for a 10:30am kick-off in a league away fixture against Tanfield Lea WMC First.
The Fountain FC lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, deploying Andy Gowland in goal. The defensive line consisted of Nathan Sterling at right back, Dan Cave and Lewis Sullivan as central defenders, and Jonny Thirlaway on the left. In midfield, Ian Johnstone and Lewis Currie operated as the two holding central midfielders, tasked with breaking up play and distributing the ball forward. Ahead of them, Rowan Latimer took up the right attacking midfield role, Dylan Saleh played centrally behind the striker, and Scott Thompson occupied the left attacking midfield position. Leading the line was Similoluwa Afilaka as the lone striker, expected to spearhead attacks and convert chances. The substitutes named on the bench were Malachi Martin, Anthony Okoechem, Aston Wray and Favour Ekomemen.
The match began with Tanfield firmly on the ball, passing the ball around the park well, but with every move, the Fountain made a counter move, cutting the play off at every turn as the held a firm line between Tanfield and goal.
The game however would burst into life early on when Rowan Latimer opened the scoring for The Fountain in the 15th minute. After receiving the ball off of a Tanfield play high up the pitch, Dylan Saleh provided a neat short pass inside the box, allowing Latimer to finish with composure and give the visitors an early advantage. Five minutes later, The Fountain FC were forced into an early change as Nathan Sterling went off injured after having a coming together with the Tanfield winger, leaving the pitch to be replaced by usual winger turned fullback, Malachi Martin.
From this point on, Tanfield turned up the pressure, creating chances to equilise and gain a hold of the game, being awarded a corner in the process at the 30 minute mark. As the cross came in, the ball bounced past all of the Fountain's defence, hit at the back stick where Jonny Thirlaway was stood waiting, clearing the dangerous opportunity to prevent Tanfield Lea from equalising. Despite The Fountain’s early dominance, a costly error from goalkeeper Andy Gowland in the 40th minute allowed the home side to level the scores. Gowland’s misjudgement off a separate corner kick led to a close-range tap-in for Tanfield Lea, restoring parity just before the break. The first half concluded with the teams locked at 1-1, setting up a tense second period.
The whistle for the second half blew and the Fountain regained their footing, growing in confidence and playing well with the ball at their feet. Early in the second half, Gowland was able to redeem his earlier mistake with a crucial triple save at the edge of his area, diving at the feet of an onrushing attacker in the 60th minute to parry the ball away, only for the ball to fall into the path of a second striker, as Gowland bravely dove at the feet to block the next shot to keep his side in it, before diving at the feet of a third attacker, collecting the ball and retaining the scoreline, keeping Fountain FC in the contest.
Tactical substitutions followed in the 70th minute as Anthony Okoechem replaced Ian Johnstone in midfield, while Favour Ekomemen came on for the the outstanding Rowan Latimer in the attacking line. The match grew increasingly physical and fractious, with three yellow cards shown in the 75th minute: Similoluwa Afilaka was booked for persistent infringements, a Tanfield Lea player for violently grabbing Simi by the neck, and Malachi Martin for dissent.
Tensions were high, and in the 80th minute, the Fountain were awarded a penalty, presenting a golden chance to regain the lead. Unfortunately, Afilaka’s spot-kick went wide, a missed opportunity that proved costly. The striker came agonisingly close to redemption in the 89th minute when he took the ball past the Tanfield defence, taking the shot, only for the effort to strike the crossbar, denying the Fountain a late winner as the game ended 1-1, with the visitors earning a well deserved point against last seasons division 1 champions, resulting in their first ever Premier point.
Dan Cave’s commanding presence in central defence stood out throughout the match, earning him the man of the match accolade for his composed and resolute performance. The referee, Chris Shield, managed the game well, maintaining control and fairness with a strong display.
In the end, The Fountain FC had to settle for a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Tanfield Lea, a result that reflected the competitive nature of the contest and the fine margins that separated the two sides.
