In a tightly contested league match at the Delves Lane Community Association Pitch on 7th September 2025, The Turf FC emerged victorious against Leadgate Workmen's Club, securing a narrow 1-0 win. The match kicked off at 10:30 am, with an attendance of 50 fans witnessing the action unfold.

The Turf FC lined up in a 4-1-2-3 formation, designed to provide both defensive solidity and attacking flair. Andy Gowland made his first start between the sticks (The new Sheriff in town), shielded by a back four consisting of Brandon Fitzgerald on the right, Jamie Tincknell and Dan Cave in central defence, and Nathan Sterling on the left. Ian Johnstone played as the lone central midfielder, tasked with linking defence and attack. Ahead of him, Joe Currie and Lewis Sullivan operated as right and left attacking midfielders, respectively, while Ryan Hardy, Scott Thompson, and Owen Hardy formed a dynamic front three, with Owen taking the place of Lewis Currie in the starting line-up, having picked up a knock in the team warm-up.

The substitutes for The Turf FC included Jonny Thirlaway, Damo Freeman, Lewis Currie and Ben Walton, who would all be called upon later in the match to add fresh legs and tactical adjustments.

The first half saw The Turf FC take control early on, and their efforts bore fruit in the 25th minute when Ryan Hardy scored a stunning solo goal. Picking up the ball in his own half, Hardy showcased his pace and skill, weaving through the opposition's defence before slotting the ball past the Leadgate goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into raptures.

As the match progressed, Leadgate Workmen's Club struggled to find their rhythm, often thwarted by The Turf's disciplined defensive line. A freekick was awarded to Leadgate in the 35th minute on the edge of the Turf's box, fired in over the wall, bjt was met with a simple catch for Gowland in net.

The half-time whistle blew with The Turf FC leading 1-0, leaving Leadgate with much to ponder as they regrouped for the second half.

The second half saw Leadgate Workmen's Club push for an equaliser, who were arguably the stronger side throughout the second half, but The Turf's defence remained resolute. In the 70th minute, a tactical substitution was made as Jonny Thirlaway replaced Nathan Sterling, while Lewis Currie replaced Ian Johnstone in the middle, bringing fresh energy to the left side of defence. This change allowed The Turf to maintain their shape while still looking to counter-attack.

In the 75th minute, Damo Freeman came on for Lewis Sullivan, further reinforcing the midfield as The Turf FC aimed to hold onto their slender lead. Freeman's introduction added a layer of tenacity to the midfield, disrupting Leadgate's attempts to build momentum.

As the match drew to a close, Ben Walton was introduced in the 85th minute, taking the place of Owen Hardy. Walton's fresh legs provided an additional outlet for The Turf FC, allowing them to maintain pressure on the opposition and limit Leadgate's chances.

Despite a spirited effort from Leadgate Workmen's Club in the dying moments, The Turf FC held firm to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory. Ryan Hardy's exceptional solo goal proved to be the difference, earning him the Man of the Match accolade for his outstanding performance. The Turf FC's tactical discipline and resilience were key in this league encounter, setting a positive tone for the matches to come.
