Wigmore Wanderers FC travelled to Seager Road Sports Ground on the morning of 14 September 2025 to face New Road Athletic in a league away fixture, kicking off promptly at 10:30am. The Wanderers delivered a commanding performance to secure a 5-1 victory, emphatically outplaying their hosts over the 90 minutes plus added time.
Deploying a 4-2-1-3 formation, Wigmore Wanderers set up with Zach Henderson in goal, protected by a back four consisting of Tom Spearink at right back, Alex Toms and Oli Gibbons as central defenders, and Harvey Edkins covering the left flank. In midfield, Liam Apps and Harley Tutt operated as the double pivot, tasked with both shielding the defence and linking play forward. Jack Downey occupied the attacking midfield role, expected to create chances and support the front three. Up front, the trio featured Kai Wong on the right wing, Jason Yuen leading as the central striker, and George Hennessy on the left wing, all charged with stretching the opposition defence and converting opportunities. The substitutes named were Ben Brewster, George Tutt, James Lundie, and Finley Leah.
The match burst into life in the 19th minute when Jack Downey opened the scoring. A well-delivered free kick from Oli Gibbons found Downey inside the box, who calmly finished with his right foot from close range to give the Wanderers an early lead. The visitors continued to press and doubled their advantage in the 34th minute. Oli Gibbons again played provider, this time with a precise long pass that set Jason Yuen through on goal, and Yuen made no mistake, slotting home with his right foot from inside the box.
Shortly after the second goal, tactical changes began as Ben Brewster replaced Tom Spearink at right back in the 36th minute, signalling a shift in approach. Despite Wigmoreโs dominance, New Road Athletic pulled one back on 41 minutes through a penalty, calmly dispatched with the right foot, offering a brief glimmer of hope for the home side.
However, Wigmore Wanderers responded immediately before the break. In the 45th minute, Harley Tutt played a neat short pass to Jason Yuen, who finished with his left foot from close range inside the box, restoring the two-goal cushion just before the half-time whistle.
At the interval, the score stood at 3-1 to Wigmore Wanderers, reflecting their control and attacking threat throughout the first 45 minutes.
The second half saw the Wanderers continue their relentless assault. Just five minutes after the restart, Jason Yuen turned provider, laying off a short pass to Kai Wong who finished clinically with his right foot inside the box to make it 4-1. The scoring spree was not over, as Oli Gibbons stepped up in the 54th minute to deliver a stunning direct free kick from outside the box, curling the ball with his left foot beyond the goalkeeper and into the net.
Wigmore Wanderers then made further tactical substitutions to maintain their intensity. George Tutt replaced Harvey Edkins at left back in the 56th minute, followed by James Lundie coming on for left forward George Hennessy in the 60th minute. Later, in the 66th minute, Finley Leah was introduced for central defender Alex Toms, ensuring fresh legs at the back as the Wanderers saw out the match comfortably.
Throughout the contest, Oli Gibbons was a standout performer, not only solid in defence but also instrumental in attack with two assists and a spectacular free kick goal, earning him the player of the match accolade.
The referee managed the game well, with an 80 performance rating, allowing the match to flow despite the physicality and intensity on display.
In front of a modest crowd of 12 spectators, Wigmore Wanderers FC demonstrated clinical finishing, tactical flexibility, and defensive solidity to secure a comprehensive 5-1 victory over New Road Athletic at Seager Road Sports Ground.
