On 14 June 2026, Young Stars travelled to Rheenendal to face Porto in a league away match kicking off at 10:00am. The contest ended in a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Young Stars after 90 minutes plus added time, with both sides showing determination and tactical discipline under referee Charles.
Young Stars lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, deploying Roston in goal behind a back four of Boettie at right back, Zop and Arzi as central defenders, and Kyle on the left. The midfield double pivot consisted of Seuna and Junior Juks, tasked with breaking up play and distributing the ball efficiently. Ahead of them, Kiembie operated on the right wing, Yanga centrally as the attacking midfielder, and Rushine Davids on the left, all supporting lone striker Maydie. This setup aimed to balance defensive solidity with attacking creativity, expecting the wide midfielders to supply crosses and the central attacking midfielder to link play with the striker. On the bench were Algin Kleynhans, Lizzy, and Jerome Boukers, ready to influence the game if called upon.
The match began with both teams probing cautiously, but it was Porto who first drew the referee’s attention when one of their players received a yellow card in the 30th minute for persistent infringements. A minute later, Roston was called into action, punching clear a dangerous cross to prevent Porto from capitalising on their pressure.
Young Stars took the lead in the 32nd minute through Seuna, whose well-timed run and finish put his side ahead. The goal was a crucial moment, giving Young Stars confidence and forcing Porto to respond. Porto managed to restore parity just before half-time, scoring in the 44th minute to level the match at 1-1. The first half concluded with the teams locked in a balanced contest.
Early in the second half, Roston produced a vital point-blank reaction save in the 49th minute, denying Porto a chance to regain the lead and keeping Young Stars in the game. The visitors made their first tactical substitution immediately after, replacing striker Maydie with Algin Kleynhans in the 50th minute, signalling a shift in attacking approach.
Shortly after, Kyle’s misjudgement in defence at the 52nd minute momentarily unsettled Young Stars but did not lead to a goal, as the team quickly regrouped. In the 61st minute, another tactical change saw Lizzy come on for Yanga, injecting fresh energy into the attacking midfield role.
Porto’s frustrations boiled over in the 74th minute when one of their players was shown a second yellow card, resulting in a red card and reducing them to ten men. Young Stars capitalised on this advantage by making a further substitution in the 78th minute, bringing on Jerome Boukers for Boettie to maintain defensive stability.
The decisive moment arrived late in the match when Lizzy scored inside the box in the 88th minute, restoring Young Stars’ lead and ultimately securing the victory. The goal was a testament to the tactical adjustments and persistence shown by the team throughout the game.
Young Stars’ disciplined defensive structure, combined with timely attacking contributions from Seuna and Lizzy, proved enough to overcome Porto’s challenge at Rheenendal. The victory will be a significant boost as they continue their league campaign away from home.
