Introduction
Football Club Internazionale Milano, commonly referred to as Internazionale (pronounced [?internattsjo'na?le]) or simply Inter, and colloquially known as Inter Milan in English-speaking countries, is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. Inter is the only Italian side to have always competed in the top flight of Italian football since its debut in 1909.
Founded in 1908 following a schism within the Milan Cricket and Football Club (now AC Milan), Inter won its first championship in 1910. Since its formation, the club has won 35 domestic trophies, including 19 league titles, 9 Coppa Italia and 7 Supercoppa Italiana. From 2006 to 2010, the club won five successive league titles, equalling the all-time record at that time. They have won the European Cup/Champions League three times: two back-to-back in 1964 and 1965 and then another in 2010.
Inter's home ground is the San Siro Stadium, which opened in 1926. Inter shares this stadium with its biggest rival, AC Milan. The first game played at San Siro was a match between the two Milan sides, with Inter beating AC Milan 6–3.
History
Inter was formed in 1908 by a group of Milanese businessmen who wanted to create a club that was open to players of all nationalities. The club's first president was Giovanni Paramithiotti, and its first captain was Hernst Marktl, who was Swiss.
Inter won its first Italian league championship in 1910, and has since gone on to win a total of 19 titles. The club's most successful period was in the 1960s, when they won the European Cup/Champions League twice, as well as five consecutive Serie A titles.
Inter has also won the UEFA Cup/Europa League three times, and the FIFA Club World Cup once. The club's most recent major trophy was the Coppa Italia in 2022.
