In 1990, most of the Georgian club including FC Dinamo Tbilisi withdrew from the Soviet League system and joined the Georgian SSR regional league, as the first Umaglesi Liga. The club predecessor, FC Dinamo Sokhumi refused to join Umaglesi Liga and played in the Soviet First League. Tskhumi was formed to represent Sokhumi. Star player Gocha Gogrichiani and Giorgi Chikhradze, joined from Dinamo. The first president was Guram Gabeskiria.
