Fola was founded in 1949 by a group of Ivorian students who were studying in France. The club's name is a reference to the Fon people of Benin, who are known for their strength and resilience.
Fola quickly became one of the top clubs in Ivory Coast, winning its first Ligue 1 title in 1963. The club went on to win five more Ligue 1 titles in the 1970s and 1980s.
Fola also enjoyed success in the Coupe de Côte d'Ivoire, winning the tournament six times. The club's most recent Coupe de Côte d'Ivoire title came in 2018.
