The team was formed in 1883 as Irchester Excelsior, and changed their name to United two years later. They have played at their current ground, Alfred Street, since 1921.
The team's most successful period came in the 1920s and 1930s, when they won the Rushden & District League on nine occasions. They have also won the Chromasport Northants Combination League on two occasions, in 1983 and 1999.
