It is a completely standalone league system which does not feed into the English football league pyramid. The Downs League is unusual in that all matches are played on one site, namely the large open space known as Bristol Downs. The league is affiliated to the Gloucestershire County FA.
The league was founded in 1905 and currently has 39 member clubs. The teams are divided into four divisions, with promotion and relegation between the divisions each season. The top division is the Norman Hardy Cup, while the bottom division is the All Saints Cup.
