Maclean FC was founded in 1972 by a group of local footballers. The club initially competed in the Clarence Valley Football League, before joining the Northern Rivers Football League in 1977.
Maclean FC has won the Northern Rivers Football League premiership on four occasions, in 1980, 1982, 1992, and 2017. The club has also won the Northern Rivers Football League grand final cup on four occasions, in 1980, 1982, 1992, and 2017.
