About Suffolk Youth Football League

Youth football across Suffolk

The Suffolk Youth Football League provides age-group football for clubs across the county. Its geographical remit is generally Suffolk, and the competition is sanctioned by Suffolk County FA.

The league covers the full journey from under-7 mini-soccer to under-18 youth football. It is primarily a Saturday competition, making it distinct from the separate Sunday youth leagues that also operate in the county.

Playing formats that change with age

Teams move through four main playing formats. Under-7 and under-8 football is 5v5, followed by 7v7 at under-9 and under-10. Under-11 and under-12 teams play 9v9, before the league moves to 11v11 from under-13 through to under-18.

This progression changes the number of players, pitch dimensions and goal sizes in stages rather than moving children straight from mini-soccer to the adult game. The competition rules follow the FA framework for each age group.

Development in the younger sections

The youngest age groups are development-focused. Under-7 and under-8, under-9 and under-10, and under-11 football uses restricted trophy periods rather than a full season built around published league-table competition. From under-12 upwards, the available structures can include season-long league tables.

The league also has a balancing measure for development matches at under-8, under-9 and under-10. When one side establishes a four-goal lead, the other team may add a player; a further player can be added if the gap reaches six. The extra players are withdrawn again as the score becomes closer. This is a specific matchday mechanism intended to keep younger games more balanced.

League, cup and plate football

Alongside divisional fixtures, Suffolk Youth Football League teams can take part in age-group cup competition. Its cup structure also includes a Plate for teams that lose their first match in the opening rounds, giving those sides another knockout competition rather than ending their cup programme immediately.

The format therefore changes as players get older, but league and knockout football remain connected within the same county-wide competition.
