Abbey Villa 2nds travelled all the way to The Cliff last night for their final league fixture of the season, against Crumlin Star 2nds. And what a performance they put in. Villa produced a commanding performance to secure a comprehensive 0:6 win, leaving Crumlin Star unable to respond throughout the 90 minutes.

From the outset, Villa showed intent. Carson Mann’s early attempt in the 7th minute went wide, but it was a warning sign of things to come. Just three minutes later, Daniel McFarland forced a save from the home goalkeeper, signalling Villa’s attacking threat. The breakthrough arrived swiftly in the 11th minute when McFarland delivered a precise cross into the box, allowing Mann to finish inside the area and open the scoring.

Crumlin Star tried to respond immediately, but Matthew Edwards was resolute in defence, blocking a dangerous effort in the 12th minute and again denying another chance four minutes later. Villa’s defensive solidity was evident, with Joshua Colville also making a crucial interception in the 22nd minute to prevent a home opportunity.

Villa then doubled their lead in the 20th minute through Kyle Irwin, who capitalised on a well-worked team move, finishing expertly from a cross provided by Casey Courtney. Villa’s midfield and wide players combined effectively to create openings, with Courtney’s influence growing as the half progressed.

Crumlin Star received a yellow card in the 33rd minute, reflecting their frustration as Villa maintained control. Villa came close to extending their lead when Casey Courtney’s effort struck the crossbar in the 35th minute. However, Mann was on hand again in the 38th minute to convert a corner kick from McFarland with a simple tap-in, making it 0:3.

Another yellow card was shown to Crumlin Star just before half-time, highlighting their increasingly desperate attempts to stem the tide. The first half concluded though, with Villa firmly in command.

The second half began with a booking for James Edwards in the 49th minute, a sign of the physical nature of the contest. Shortly after, an injury forced Daniel McFarland off, with Thomas Drysdale coming on in his place at the 50-minute mark.

Crumlin Star's frustration continued as they received yet another yellow card, this time for dissent in the 51st minute. Villa’s goalkeeper Ross Murray was called into action with a full stretch save in the 60th minute, followed by a point-blank reaction save two minutes later, keeping the clean sheet intact.

Villa extended their lead in the 66th minute when Drysdale, scored a tap-in after parried shot by Mann, who was proving to be a constant threat. Murray then tipped a dangerous shot over the bar in the 70th minute, maintaining the visitors’ defensive resilience.

A penalty awarded to Villa in the 75th minute was taken by Mann but was saved by the Crumlin Star goalkeeper, denying him a hat-trick. Shortly after, another injury substitution saw Curtis Shannon replaced by Jake Rainey in the 76th minute.

Rainey made an immediate impact, scoring in the 82nd minute with a long-range strike set up by Kyle Irwin’s short pass. Just two minutes later, Drysdale headed home from a corner delivered by Irwin, sealing the emphatic 0:6 victory.

James King received Villa's second yellow card of the game in the 85th minute, but it did little to dampen Villa’s dominant display. Matthew Edwards was deservedly named Man of the match for his outstanding defensive contributions, including crucial blocks that prevented Crumlin Star from mounting any meaningful attacks.

Villa's comprehensive win at The Cliff showcased their attacking prowess and defensive discipline, leaving Crumlin Star unable to find any foothold in the game. The formation & discipline was executed to perfection, with key performances across the pitch ensuring a memorable evening for Villa. The win also secures a second successive 4th place finish in 3A.

MOTM: Matty Edwards.??

A fantastic performance on the night from everyone. What a result, and what a way to close another season. That brings an end to my 13th full season in charge of Villa 2nds. And I don't think I'm over exadurating, when I say, that last night was the best performance (At least in the league anyway) that I've had the pleasure in over seeing at the club. Superb, what a team.????????
