Abbey Villa 2nds travelled to Olympia Leisure Centre yesterday for their league fixture against Willowbank 2nds. Villa produced a commanding display to secure a comprehensive 0:5 win, leaving Willowbank unable to respond throughout the 90 minutes.
The match began with Villa probing for openings, though early attempts from Carson Mann in the 14th minute and Jake Wilson in the 18th minute failed to trouble the Willowbank goalkeeper, with Mann’s effort going wide and Wilson’s shot saved. Mann again fired high over the bar in the 21st minute, and James Edwards also saw a headed effort sail over the crossbar at 25 minutes. Thomas Drysdale tested the keeper with a saved attempt in the 31st minute, signalling Villa’s growing dominance in the attacking third.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Jake Wilson delivered a precise cross into the box, allowing Daniel McFarland to finish clinically inside the area and open the scoring for Villa. This goal settled the visitors and set the tone for the remainder of the first half, which ended with Abbey Villa holding a deserved 0:1 lead.
The second half saw Willowbank struggle to gain any foothold, compounded by two yellow cards shown to their players in the 65th and 67th minutes, which disrupted their rhythm and discipline. Villa made tactical substitutions to maintain their momentum, bringing on Mark Gilliland for Carson Mann in the 70th minute and James Boyd replacing Thomas Drysdale five minutes later. These changes injected fresh energy into the side.
Villa doubled their advantage in the 78th minute when Jake Wilson once again provided a pinpoint cross, this time assisting James King who finished neatly inside the box. Shortly after, Jake Wilson was substituted off for Paul Mulholland in the 80th minute, continuing the tactical refresh.
Mark Gilliland made an immediate impact, scoring his first goal in the 88th minute following a short pass from James Boyd. He then doubled his tally in stoppage time at 91 minutes, converting a cross from Paul Mulholland. The scoring spree continued as Daniel McFarland completed his brace in the 93rd minute, finishing inside the box after a short pass from Mulholland.
Villa’s 0:5 victory was a testament to their clinical finishing and cohesive team performance. Sam Millar, at left back, was named man of the match for his consistent defensive work and contribution to the team’s overall solidity. Willowbank were left to rue missed opportunities and disciplinary lapses as Villa marched on with a resounding away win.
