Corinthian Casuals U12 travelled to the Richard Evans Memorial Ground on Sunday morning for an 11:15am league kick-off against Balham U12. With no substitutes available and strong winds sweeping across the pitch, the Casuals delivered an excellent collective performance to secure a convincing 5–1 victory.

With Albie unavailable due to illness and Leo Bradley also unavailable for the match, the team adapted by rotating players in goal during the game. Fraser Ross started between the posts, Carter Matthews took over at the start of the second half, and around the 45-minute mark Cooper Lund stepped in to complete the match in goal — a great example of the squad’s flexibility and team spirit.

The strong wind made conditions difficult, especially when playing against it, but the Casuals showed maturity and composure throughout. Instead of forcing long balls, the team relied on quick passing combinations and intelligent movement, keeping possession well and trusting one another to find the best options.

Starting in a 3-4-1 formation, the Casuals lined up:

Fraser in goal

Defence: Lourenço, Freddy and Alfie

Midfield: Thomas on the right, Archer and Harvey centrally, Cooper on the left

Forward: Carter leading the line

Balham set up with two defenders at the back and three across midfield, looking to crowd the centre of the pitch. However, the Casuals stretched the play well using the width of the field and quickly began creating chances.

The breakthrough came in the 8th minute. Cooper delivered an excellent cross from the left and Thomas timed his run perfectly to head home from close range.

“Brilliant delivery… and an even better finish! The Casuals take the lead.”

The second goal arrived in the 20th minute when Carter played a long ball into the penalty area and Cooper reacted quickest, finishing confidently with his left foot to make it 2–0.

Just four minutes later the pressure paid off again. After sustained pressure in the Balham box, Harvey was perfectly positioned to tap home from close range, extending the lead to 3–0.

Early in the second half came the fourth goal, starting from a clever short-corner routine. Thomas played the short corner to Alfie, who delivered an inviting cross into the box where Freddy rose highest to head home.

The fifth goal perfectly summed up the team’s spirit. Thomas drove into the penalty area and, instead of shooting, unselfishly squared the ball across goal with a classic sweaty pass, allowing Fraser — now playing outfield — to finish with a simple tap-in.

“That’s unselfish football… and Fraser won’t score many easier than that.”

Balham managed to pull one back late in the match with a solo effort in the 57th minute, but it proved only a consolation in a game largely controlled by the Casuals.

Throughout the match the team worked tirelessly for one another, covering positions, passing with confidence and adapting well to the challenging wind conditions. Rotating goalkeepers while maintaining attacking momentum showed both the resilience and unity within the squad.

Thomas delivered an outstanding performance on the right side, scoring the opening goal and providing the assist for the fifth. His influence on the game earned him the Player of the Match award.

Elsewhere in the league, results added further intrigue to the title race. With Cheam involved in a draw and other rivals dropping points, several teams remain firmly in contention. Corinthian Casuals have placed themselves right in the middle of that battle, and focus now turns to a crucial away fixture against Tim next week.

After the match, lifelong Casuals supporter Samuel Vine shared his enthusiastic thoughts on the performance.

“Five goals, three goalkeepers and wind trying to take the ball back to London… and the Casuals still win 5–1. That’s proper football!” he said with a grin.
